Book Overview

New York Times bestseller; 6 starred reviews

At once provocative, terrifying, and darkly subversive, Dread Nation is Justina Ireland's stunning vision of an America both foreign and familiar--a country on the brink, at the explosive crossroads where race, humanity, and survival meet.

Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania--derailing the War Between the States and changing the nation forever.

In this new America, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the Native and Negro Education Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn to put down the dead.

But there are also opportunities--and Jane is studying to become an Attendant, trained in both weaponry and etiquette to protect the well-to-do. It's a chance for a better life for Negro girls like Jane. After all, not even being the daughter of a wealthy white Southern woman could save her from society's expectations.

But that's not a life Jane wants. Almost finished with her education at Miss Preston's School of Combat in Baltimore, Jane is set on returning to her Kentucky home and doesn't pay much mind to the politics of the eastern cities, with their talk of returning America to the glory of its days before the dead rose.

I hate zombie stories... Loved this
An American twist on interesting history. White, black, Indian and even Chinese in a zombie overrun country in post 14th Amendment times. More of this series will read.

   Every last page was good!
I LOVED this and its sequel. Probably in the top five books that I read that year.

   Definitely alternative fiction
I read MS Ireland's book for the book club. For me it was the Hunger Games meets The Civil War meets American current politics. Her female lead characters were compelling and her writing style was easy to follow. However, so many different messages made it confusing. Including white people are basically all terrible, people of color are all trodden down. Im not a fan of undead literature zombie ''.

   This book is awesome
For his birthday, I get another copy of my father's. I would also be a little surprised if nobody bought the film rights.

   Couldn't put it down
I read this review somewhere after reading a review that mentioned a marvelous heroine, but the storytelling is bisexual. I loved the characters and the historical way in which the story wowed realistic events. As soon as I bought it, I wanted to finish the sequel, but there is not a single one. I hope that there is a sequel in the works.

I can’t wait to read the next book
I bought the book for my 15 year old son, but I ended up stealing it from his books-to-read-next pile before he had a chance to read it. The book loved absolutely. I NEED to know what happens to Jane so that the publisher can give the author, Justina Ireland, alllll the money to write more books.

   More of this please
The protagonist is intelligent and strong, but also has understandable flaws. The real friendship feels like a central relationship. The action is exciting and tense. Here Ms. Ireland does some fantastic world building.

   Dread nation
The dead are rising up and pretty much they are having black people go to school to fight for the rest of the country. One part of the story I did not see coming, I thought she was never going to be the enemy.

   Rise up.
I hate zombies, they squir me out. Likely. I can 't even make it through 10 pages of a zombie novel, let alone 5 minutes of a zombie film, examining racism and its text-subtexthypertext is a standout read that you can not ignore. Between her richly written characters and such a PERFECT touch at world building, the reader is lost and doesn 't want to come up for air at any point. This is the historical what if about the civil war that we want you all to be in the internets - don 't miss out.
