WINER OF A CORETA SCOT KING HONOR AND THE JANE ADAMS PEACE AWARD

Each kindness makes the world a little better

This unforgettable book is written and illustrated by the award-winning team that created The Other Side and the Caldecott Honor winner Coming On Home Soon. With its powerful anti-bullying message and striking art, it will resonate with readers long after they've put it down.

Chloe and her friends won't play with the new girl, Maya. Every time Maya tries to join Chloe and her friends, they reject her. Eventually Maya stops coming to school. When Chloe's teacher gives a lesson about how even small acts of kindness can change the world, Chloe is stung by the lost opportunity for friendship, and thinks about how much better it could have been if she'd shown a little kindness toward Maya.

Great for older elementary school and Middle School
This book really touched me — one of our daughters got bullied in middle school so I understood one of the girls in the books. The book didn't end the way I thought it would -- it ended better- it should make every parent and child think of all the times they weren't kind, and sometimes we miss that chance to be kind, she said.

A great book...everyone needs to read!
A great book, Gillian. As an elementary principal, every classroom should have this book. It's great to hear so many good things about it.

What we need more of in today's world
A book with an important message. The book warns that being unkind or unfriendly to others will have long-term consequences. It also shows how children typically follow the lead of their parents rather than listen to their own feelings.

Beautifully illustrated by Mark Hughes. Giving people a chance is about more than just giving them a chance, Graham said.

   Very Moving And Relevant Book
It is very insightful and I feel children will learn a great lesson about others' feelings, said Dr. Julie Gerberding. I would suggest that the child read this book with a parent or teacher, as it is very moving.

   Great discussion and teaching tool
I'm a 4th grade teacher and I used the book at the beginning of the year to discuss kindness, compassion and how to treat those who appear different. Last week I read it again with my reading groups to discuss plot and theme. I asked students to tell me key events in the story and the message of the story. This book is amazing in so many ways, said Dr. Goin.

   Perfect!
He said the book "allows us to reflect on times when we were truly unkind." The reasons why students and people in general can be unkind to one another, are also well-known. A great discussion to have with your class, Mr. O'Neill said. What a great deal, said illustrator Jeff Abraham. Jacqueline Woodson, winner of the 2002 and 2003 National Book Awards, has a book out Monday titled "The Long Way Home."

This book will teach your child how to be a bully. DON'T BUY.
Although this book has rave reviews, I believe it's a terrible book for young children. The book's publisher, Scholastic, says it should not be read by children that young. My kids finished the book and said, 'this book is not kind. Normally I read a book before I can begin to read to my children, but this time I did not. Had I read it, I would have never read it. It's supposed to help teach kindness, but all it teaches is bullying. The young girl in the book is constantly being bullied and never ONCE did any kid do anything kind for her, Mr. Rule told the judge. If you want to teach your kids how to be a bully, tease and pick on kids then this is the book for you.

   Love it
This book has become one of my favorites for therapy. I really love that it is authentic and doesn't have a happy ending, added Gammerman.
