Book Overview

Playing music should be as simple and natural as drawing a breath, yet most musicians are hindered by self-consciousness, apprehension, self-doubt, and stress. Before we can truly express our inner self, we must first learn to be at peace and overcome the distractions that can make performance difficult. Kenny's remarkable work deals directly with these hindrances, and presents ways to let our natural creative powers flow freely with minimal stress and effort. Includes inspiring recordings of meditations designed to initiate positive thought. This book has become a favorite of many musicians who credit it with changing their lives Many are so impressed that they buy copies for their musician friends as gifts. Easy, effortless reading paperback.

Effortless Mastery is a book that the world really needs. It was not written by a philosopher or an academic. Kenny Werner, is one of my favorite pianists I've ever had the pleasure of working with, and in my opinion one of the best pianists living on the planet. Kenny teaches that 'The joy of practicing is concentration. The joy of playing is liberation.' Effortless Mastery teaches the seeker how to achieve both at the highest levels. It also shows how to practice effectively, promoting real growth and how to play and perform free from fear and self-judgment. I highly recommend this book. ---Quincy Jones

Motivation, Inspiration, Liberation, From a Slim, Easy to Grasp Tome.
Because I was blown away by Victor Wooten's The Music Lesson Amazon, I thought I might like this book. Not only is this author a prolific recording artist, band leader and composer, but he is also side-man to some other world-class artists. He knows what runs through an artist's mind and how people behave and addresses it in this no-nonsense book, which also comes with a CD of meditations to help you implement some of what he is saying in the text, and uses quotes from other great teachers, players, and thinkers to illustrate his points. I practice more thanks to Kenny.

   Essential Reading for Any Musician
Over the years, I have been reading it a number of times and always end up giving the copy away to someone else. As an intermediate music teacher, I require private students to read this book.

   This book is awesome.
I have struggled with anxiety for years while playing my guitar. This book has really opened my eyes to the potential that I have. I am actually beginning to feel really relaxed on my instrument, and I can feel myself growing as a musician, something I have not felt in a long time. I really recommend it ''.

   Good purchase.
The feedback of the person who actually received it was positive, so I left it as mine.

Don't kill the spirit of music (and learning).
I started playing just fifty years after stopping. Seems like a Löpt of folks enjoy playing in the band at school and then stopping after the twelfth grade graduation. All school music teachers need to read this book to help address the very common problem of not playing well enough, sounding good enough, or having standards that take the fun and creativity out of it. For this reason, all teachers now faced with CORE STANDARDS must have the state legislatures read this book or we'll all be stupider soon.

   No Thanks
This book was recommended by a fellow drummer. I gave it a star. Here is why I would like to read a book that stays on the topic, where I don 't end up stepping in Jesuspoo. i did not buy a book on the beliefs of God. We don 't even believe in God or have the same religion. When reading a book that feels like the person goes off topic and pushes religion down your throat, I find it rude, offensive, and disappointing. If you are looking for a good book about being a musician and you are an atheist, agnostic or another religion, this book may be a major disappointment for you.

   Great book for any musician
Book is great on how our thoughts affect our playing as musicians. Really good advice on the importance of mastering a piece of music before moving on to the next thing, whenever possible. But has certainly had an influence on my thinking as I work on my technique. OK '' is no longer good enough. I need to really be comfortable and play without thinking about the piece before moving on and trying it at a different tempo or going to the next etude. We can not force playing in the zone, but there are things we can do to make it more accessible.

   Very Inspiring Book
I have a great number of books on guitar and music theory. I was not looking for more technical inspiration and direction. I was looking for something to help my developmental perspective. I am always looking and listening for jewels of wisdom... the insights from successful musicians and professionals. I finished this book awhile ago and I read it over and over again. I think this strikes the right tone and balance of all the Zen-type references out there, focusing on practical mental and emotional reprogramming.
