Great Biography!
Derived From Web , Jun 1, 2022
The book of Smith adds depth to the depth that is lacking in earlier biographies by Eisenhower. The author, a true scholar, refrains from reaching untained conclusions or expressing his personal opinion. The documentation is outstanding and provides superior paths to a far reaching examination of the period. Ike's first book for any student of World War II and A must read his presidency of Ike.

Highly Recommend
Derived From Web , Jun 1, 2022
The real historians have picked up the cudgels sadly since Stephen Ambrose has been exposed as a plagiarist and phony of the first order. One of them is Jean Smith. This is truly a great work, neither hagiography nor revise history, but biography in the magesterial tradition of the best. I do not know if this will be considered the definitive ike bio -- but surely it is in the running. For those of us who were ambrose and intrigued by Ike, we have to start from a reasonably clean slate to know the facts from so much Ambrose fiction. For this purpose, I recommend Smith's book.

A great second-look at Eisenhower
Derived From Web , Jun 1, 2022
My 20th century college professor portrayed George Marshall as an amiable bumbler who bucked his way through WW II and an indifferent president who would rather play golf than protect Ike from the mean Republicans. Smith's portrayal is of a man who had luck, but he also worked his rear end to master his trade, and a skilled politician who knew what he wanted and did what had to be done. This is a welcome review of the man who trusted a weatherman enough to gamble on the D-day landings and bucked the establishment to prevent the U.S. from using atomic weapons at Dien Bien Phu and Quemoy and Matsu. Modern politicians should read this book and adhere to Ike's criteria as to when America should go to war. What could you want more?

Great Book about a Great Man
Derived From Web , Jun 1, 2022
I do most of my reading on the commuter train and with this book I never heard a conductor calling a single stop. And I often read chapter endings aloud when I got home to hear the sound of the beautiful prose. In this sixth attempt to try to read World War II, the author persuaded me to understand Eisenhower's Crusade in Europe. And finally, the conflict was explained in Ike's own words.

Ike the thoughtful
Derived From Web , Jun 1, 2022
I was not aware of the depth of his mind and his writing skills. This is in sharp contrast to the popular image of him as a somewhat detached Chief Executive who played golf and projected himself as a somewhat inelegant speaker. It is a pessive book, but if you like long biography, you won 't be disappointed.

strongly recommend this choice

A long book with an incredible history of Ike's military career. I haven 't yet completed the book, not an obsessive reader ''. What I have been going through is thorough, well written and has held my attention.

War and Peace
Derived From Web , Jun 1, 2022
I just finished reading two books by Rick Atkinson, Guns at Last Light and Army at Dawn, both of whom Eisenhower plays a leading role as Allied Commander. War and Pease is a good follower of these two books. One could argue that reading Eisenhower in war and Pease would be a good start on WWII, followed by Atkinson.

Good book though lopsided in areas of detail
Derived From Web , Sep 3, 2020
In War and Peace, Eisenhower is a whole book worth reading. I was just disappointed that when the author skimmed parts of Ike's life, yet he goes into pinpointed detail about members of Ikes presidential staff, but as a native of Kansas, who visited his boyhood home, museum, and grave several times and have long admired the general, I am pleased with the experience from this biography.

Getting to know General Eisenhower
Derived From Web , Sep 25, 2019
I gave this book a five star rating because it never moved me to stop reading it and provided great insight into this great man. I grew up from my parents hearing about President Eisenhower. By the time I understood who he was, he was mentioned almost god-like. Every president was compared to him after him. Mr. Smith's book showed me that General Eisenhower was only a man with the need to learn and mature, as we all do. But I finished this book by realizing how perfect God works, as I can now see that every step of General Eisenhower's life prepared him to lead America and the world through some of the hardest trials we have ever experienced. May God be merciful with us and plan for us a leader like General Eisenhower to lead us through our next great crisis.
