New York Times Bestseller
A 2015 Newbery Honor Book Going to school and making new friends can be tough. But going to school and making new friends while wearing a bulky hearing aid strapped to your chest? That requires superpowers In this funny, poignant graphic novel memoir, author/illustrator Cece Bell chronicles her hearing loss at a young age and her subsequent experiences with the Phonic Ear, a very powerful--and very awkward--hearing aid.
The Phonic Ear gives Cece the ability to hear--sometimes things she shouldn't--but also isolates her from her classmates. She really just wants to fit in and find a true friend, someone who appreciates her as she is. After some trouble, she is finally able to harness the power of the Phonic Ear and become El Deafo, Listener for All. And more importantly, declare a place for herself in the world and find the friend she's longed for.

Cece is my daughter and I am so very proud ...
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
I am so proud of her for baring her soul to write El Deafo, Tunick said. She worked five years to pen and illustrate her first graphic novel, and it carries so many, many messages to everyone who reads it. I had hoped that Cece would write this book ever since she started having her Sock Mobkey books published. She is benefiting from her book-related travels and experiences as much as her readers benefit from her book. Thanks for the skin. It's just that she's a proud mama.

Recommend for Children that see others using or use Hearing Aids/Other Assistive Devices themselves!

The product was "gifted" to my daughter by her mom, Melissa. This is great for kids that are HOHDaf or if you have people in your life that are HOH or Deaf. It's kind of comic-book style with illustrations and text boxes in squares, which helps with the younger kids, Hachette said. A great book, Gillian.

graphic novel is a great format

Great story about growing up in the time of the body trainers. Great illustrations to show how progressive loss works. There was one disappointing part about the book, which deals with the double-hockey stick word. Would have loved to read with my third grade students, but felt I would have to skip this chapter or part or get permission from parents before reading. Wish that one word had been left out so it would be appropriate for all ages.

Love Love Love it!!!!

In a generous gesture of uncharacteristic compassion, Ms. Kennedy said: "I'm not Graeme, but I am his daughter." I got this book the day after I turned 10 and I was so excited to read it, I read it as soon as I got home. I read more than half the book in one day and didn't want to go to dinner because I had read from 300 until 600. The next day I took the book to school and read it at silent reading time, and I was so sad when reading was over because the book is so amazing. It was a great read, I'll never forget it. I've fallen in love with this book. I am not much of a reader and don't really like it, but this book is fantastic and because of it I like to read. This is a great looking piece of work, Cece said. You are such a strong girl, and I feel so sorry for the bad times you had. Ruby was also present at the launch of the new toy.

Great book-Informal

This was a great graphic novel about a person's life becoming deaf and dealing with it, Raymond said. The McKinlay family has a good story of how a family dealt with it as well.

Funny, wonderful book for grade-schoolers

My daughter absolutely loves the book. She first borrowed it from her school library and kept returning it over and over, which indicated to me that I should purchase it for her. A funny, true story about a kid who learns to live with a disability but doesn't let it get her down, McKeon said.

My Daughter Adores This Book
Derived From Web , Oct 10, 2019
When I read the reviews for El Deafo, I thought it would be a more serious book since it deals with some serious issues in the story, Raymond said. I put it off because I didn't want to give my daughter any reference books. It was a whim that I decided to give it a try. It made me feel so happy reading it to my children, and both of them were cracking up. The book's publishers, Random House, said they thought it was hilarious. We have since re-borrowed the book from the library, so I decided to buy them a copy. CeCe Bell made a graphic novel that was personal, humorous, and touching, making it difficult to do with a graphic novel for children. I highly recommend this book to children and adults alike.

Winner in So Many Ways besides Newberry!
Derived From Web , Sep 28, 2019
Her brother who has dyslexia took it over immediately and announces it hourly. I think it was 196, Taylor said. My daughter was impressed that he really loves the book and that it teaches empathy and understanding from a kid's eye view. There are very few books that teach empathy. Graphic novels are super-for kids with dyslexia, Allison said. Win, Win!
