Book Overview

From the rising-star designer and author of the hit blog, Elements of Style, a full-color, fully illustrated book packed with honest advice, inspiration, ideas, and lessons learned about designing a home that reflects your personality and style.

Elements of Style is a uniquely personal and practical decorating guide that shows how designing a home can be an outlet of personal expression and an exercise in self-discovery. Drawing on her ten years of experience in the interior design industry, Erin combines honest design advice and gorgeous professional photographs and illustrations with personal essays about the lessons she has learned while designing her own home and her own life--the first being: none of our homes or lives is perfect. Like a funny best friend, she reveals the disasters she confronted in her own kitchen renovation, her struggles with anorexia, her epic fight with her husband over a Lucite table, and her secrets for starting a successful blog.

Organized by rooms in the house, Elements of Style invites readers into Erin's own home as well as homes she has designed for clients. Fresh, modern, and colorful, it is brimming glamour and style as well as advice on practical matters from choosing kitchen counter materials to dressing a bed with pillows, picking a sofa, and decorating a nursery without cartoon characters.    Good design book for some
I have read lots of design books and worked as an interior designer. I enjoyed this book for its stories and it's photographs. There is not a lot of direction, design wise, but that was okay fir me. I still enjoyed this book.

   Mediocre design guidance
There are too many personal anecdotes and not enough concrete information. The images are not particularly inspiring. It was difficult to finish this book.

   Beautiful for Decor
The media couldn't load. It looks great for coffee table decor. The book's hard cover was of good quality.

As Elegant Inside as the Cover is Outside
The text is charming and inspiring. I learned a thing or two along the way, but she doesn't get overly technical. Her discussion of how-to tips and color theory was very interesting. It's great for new designers.

   Love it.
Love it. I thought it would be larger than it is. It's a perfect size. I can't wait to read it. The book is beautiful for the coffee table. It was a small rip that made it 4 stars instead of 5.

   Inspiring!
Okay, what about the 1 stars? I like Elements of Style. Don't just place it on your coffee table, open it and drink your favorite beverage while you are inspired by its pages. The writing and photographs are beautiful and informative. You will find items that appear to move from room to room for illustrative photos, but who doesn't move their favorite possessions every so often to find just the right spot for them? She explains the process, and doesn't apologize for it. If you spy an object in the book more than once, you can make a drinking game of it, having another sip of your favorite beverage.

   NOT HELPFUL
I wanted the book to be a guide to what to do and not to do, pictures of before and afters, what was done wrong and how was corrected. This book is very short on advice, and is full of pictures of the work she has done for clients, or photos of her own place, neither of which was helpful for any ideas or inspiration. The rest of the book contains a lot of her own personal information about how she prepared for her wedding. It is a nightmare to be an interior designer. The book used to talk about herself, but little guidance on how to design. It took me one day to get through it and I found it to be a waste of money.

GREAT DESIGN IDEAS...IE POTTERY BARN MEETS SOHO, AND TRADITIONAL HOME MAGAZINE
This book is amazing. I can totally relate to the hair pulling moments that she shows how beautiful and sometimes difficult it can be. I'm reading her text while looking at the pictures. The print runner produced bold exclamations. It's worth the money to keep the designs modern and trendy.
