Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah's inspiring true story--which was turned into a film, Emmanuel's Gift, narrated by Oprah Winfrey--is nothing short of remarkable.

Born in Ghana, West Africa, with one deformed leg, he was dismissed by most people--but not by his mother, who taught him to reach for his dreams. As a boy, Emmanuel hopped to school more than two miles each way, learned to play soccer, left home at age thirteen to provide for his family, and, eventually, became a cyclist. He rode an astonishing four hundred miles across Ghana in 2001, spreading his powerful message: disability is not inability. Today, Emmanuel continues to work on behalf of the disabled.

Thompson's lyrical prose and Qualls's bold collage illustrations offer a powerful celebration of triumphing over adversity.

Includes an author's note with more information about Emmanuel's charity.

Gain a new perspective on overcoming obstacles.
Gain a new perspective on overcoming obstacles by reading this biographical book about Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah. When Emmanuel was born with a deformed leg, his mother, Comfort, used tough love to show him that he can be independent. When Emmanuel loses his mother as a teenager, he is determined to honor her by showing everyone that being disabled does not mean being unable. The young man once thought of as cursed was becoming a national hero, the book says. You can't help but be inspired by this book.

   inspirational story
Beautifully illustrated by Janet Constable, this is a lovely story. It was sent to my daughter-in-law, who teaches a class for disabled children. She said that although they have not read the entire story, they have loved the story and that it evoked more conversation than anything she has yet read to them.

Good telling of the first part of Emanuel's story. A member of my family was the one who helped him get to safety.

I assigned this as a class read with my 3rd-5th graders. It is nicely illustrated and described by one student, a real story that is important to know. I will keep this on my yearly list.

   Fantastic mentor text
My 5th graders absolutely loved this book and the story behind it. It really lets you know that you can do whatever you want to do if you put your mind to it! Great lesson, said Brian Kilpatrick, director of the University of Michigan's Center for Teacher Training.

Great story, my kids loved it
Inspirational story. My 7 year old son's book club read it. It was a blast, the boys loved it. I'm not ashamed to admit that I enjoyed reading this story even more than the boys in the book club.

   Great kids book
I got it for my 7 year old and he absolutely loves it. We are always looking for great books for our kids. We read this book before bed at least once weekly, after finishing it in one night when we first got it.
