Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

Is IQ destiny? Not nearly as much as we think. This fascinating and persuasive program argues that our view of human intelligence is far too narrow, ignoring a crucial range of abilities that matter immensely in terms of how we do in life.

Drawing on groundbreaking brain and behavioral research, Daniel Goleman shows the factors at work when people of high IQ flounder and those of modest IQ do well. These factors add up to a different way of being smart -- one he terms emotional intelligence. This includes self-awareness and impulse control, persistence, zeal and self-motivation, empathy and social deftness.

These are the qualities that mark people who excel in life, whose relationships flourish, who are stars in the workplace. Lack of emotional intelligence can sabotage the intellect and ruin careers. Perhaps the greatest toll is on children, for whom risks include depression, eating disorders, unwanted pregnancies, aggressiveness and crime.

But the news is hopeful. Emotional intelligence is not fixed at birth, and the author shows how its vital qualities can be nurtured and strengthened in all of us. And because the emotional lessons a child learns actually sculpt the brain's circuitry, he provides guidance as to how parents and schools can best use this window of opportunity in childhood. The message of this eye-opening program is one we must take to heart: the true bell curve for a democracy must measure emotional intelligence.

   Over rated Book
The book was recommended in Search Within Yourself. Brain structure changes are reported with respect to emotional memories. Most of the book is qualitative case study. The book has eighty present.
   Good problem statement
The book gives a lot of focus to the problem. It would have been nice to have this addition.
   Great Experience
The product was delivered a little earlier than I expected. When it arrived, the book was in great condition just like it was described, despite being little skeptical at first. There are a couple words written in pen inside the book on a couple pages, but they are not major or problematic. I'm very pleased with the purchase.
Great book. Good start for studying EI
Interesting examples, statistics and explanations about how we handle our emotions as parents, professionals and in our daily lives.
   Good book :)
Good points made in book, but wish it was more in depth. Lacked to teach some of the more complex subjects.
   Must read!!!
It was well written and had notable references. I have learned a lot. Should be taught in grade school.
   No help at all
If you want the detailed science behind EQ, but not the help dealing with EQ deficiencies, then you are in for a treat. If you need the minutiae, skip this book and get the EQ 2.0 which addresses improving your EQ.
   The original and definitive
The original text is the most in depth. If this topic interests you, start here. It was published over 20 years ago and there are some words that are dated. Something to note.
   It's a must read.
The book makes life easier. My partner and I both read it, and we are constantly referencing it to understand what we are feeling, or to have a better grasp on society.
The overall premise of the book is a good one - emotional intelligence and the ability to handle ...
The premise of the book is that emotional intelligence and the ability to handle our own emotions as well as recognize and interact with others is an important skill in all aspects of life. Goleman uses parables to fool the reader into thinking that there is a change in the context of the book, without any discussion of important and relevant examples that lie farther away from the extreme examples he includes. In multiple places, Goleman assumes an incredible amount of insight that isn't grounded in any science, and uses words like may or might when the effect it has on hypothetical and unsubstantiated relationships appear true. The book tries to cover too many subjects in one place. Poor execution, good central insight.
