The Christian faith is supposed to produce deep, positive change. So why doesn't it seem to work in real life? That question screamed at author and speaker Pete Scazzero when his church and marriage hit bottom and every Christian remedy produced nothing but anger and fatigue. In his bestselling book Scazzero unveils what's wrong with our conventional means of spiritual growth and offers not only a model of spirituality that actually works, but seven steps to transformation that will help readers experience a faith charged with authenticity, contemplation, and a hunger for God.
Peter Scazzero learned the hard way: you can't be spiritually mature while remaining emotionally immature. Even though he was a pastor of a growing church, he did what most people do:
In this bestselling book Scazzero outlines his journey and the signs of emotionally unhealthy spirituality. Read More chevron_right

I asked where this book was 30 years ago when I started reading it. Every Christian should read this book.

Balanced and helpful perspective on contemplative christianity
Derived From Web , Aug 6, 2020
I would recommend this to anyone who wants to have a more intimate relationship with God and other humans. It is good to know that these are only a few aspects of Christianity. If you are just beginning your faith journey, I would recommend you to read more about the basics of the Bible.

For those seeking a deeper spirituality
Derived From Web , Apr 10, 2020
The author had a hidden agenda and the book was not scriptural according to a few negative reviews. Awash. If the spirituality of John of the Cross, Thomas Merton, John Calvin, and others is not biblical, read church history and educate yourself. The author may just have answers for the souls who admit their Christianity has not changed their lives. I enjoyed the chapter about how differentiated one is the most. I did not score very high. If you want to know God, then you must know yourself. I can relate to the author living a disconnected life. All my family of origin issues were not healed by God regardless of how much I fasted, prayed, surrendered, and so forth. The book suggests some deep work is the way forward. Keep an open mind and give it a chance. God bless.

The Devil is in the Details
Derived From Web , Jan 4, 2019
The book seems to be helpful on the surface. There is a scene in the book in which the author discusses yelling at his wife and trying to intimidate her into submission and other moments in which the author deviates from commonly agreed upon aspects of Christianity. Students should not be asked to read a book written by a pastor who physically abused his wife. If you really want to read this book, you should get it from your local library, because I wouldn't buy this book and therefore give this author more revenue.

This guy means well but assumes everyone has the same problems he had.
Derived From Web , Jan 4, 2019
The people crash and burn when health and wealth prosperity fails. The book documents what happens when a person crashes and burns due to a defect. Rather than getting biblically grounded, they turn to mystics and monks. The author should have read Romans a few times.

seems like a movement
Derived From Web , Jan 2, 2019
I didn't care for this book, might not be where I am, didn't speak to me or impress me as more than just someone out to make money promoting a movement that he is trying to start. I have heard that it has helped others. It seems that hubby views scripture through the book rather than through the book itself, that's just backwards. If you are a busy person and can't seem to balance your life, it might help you.

Be careful! Not everything is truth or wisdom.
Derived From Web , Sep 16, 2018
The author summarizes bible passages wrongly to support his agenda. The writing is not good. He writes as though he is just an ordinary guy for a while and then makes a statement, attempting to be deep, that is confusing and useless. I started fact checking when he started saying things that seemed off after the second chapter, because my wife and I were reading it together. The author looked like he had an agenda that he was trying to hook you into with a lot of other peoples words and questions. There are some good attributes to the book, but we couldn't finish it because of the bad writing and author's self-serving nature, and I don't recommend it to anyone.

Good read and deep reflection

A great book. The book is being used in bible study. There are some serious obstacles to serving and loving others freely. I think it's a great idea.
