Book Overview

A tour de force. If you read this book, you'll never look at other people in quite the same way again.--Malcolm Gladwell

Renowned psychologist Paul Ekman explains the roots of our emotions--anger, fear, disgust, sadness, and happiness--and shows how they cascade across our faces, providing clear signals to those who can identify the clues. As featured in Malcolm Gladwell's bestseller Blink, Ekman's Facial Action Coding System offers intense training in recognizing feelings in spouses, children, colleagues, even strangers on the street.

In Emotions Revealed, Ekman distills decades of research into a practical, mind-opening, and life-changing guide to reading the emotions of those around us. He answers such questions as: How does our body signal to others whether we are slightly sad or anguished, peeved or enraged? Can we learn to distinguish between a polite smile and the genuine thing? Can we ever truly control our emotions? Packed with unique exercises and photographs, and a new chapter on emotions and lying that encompasses security and terrorism as well as gut decisions, Emotions Revealed is an indispensable resource for navigating our emotional world.

A Great Book if You Enjoy the Topic
I was hooked up on the TV show Lie To Me, which was loosely based on Dr. Paul Ekman's work and life. I began reading Ekman's books and eventually gained a Master of Science in Forensic Psychology. This book is not for the casual reader, as the material is scientific and thus very dry. If you're interested in learning facial detection and learning to read deception microexpressions, however, get this book. It is a great companion to one of Racial Ekman's first books, Unmasking the Face : A guide for recognizing emotions from first expressions.

   Revealing
Discusses and defines common emotions and describes the various facial expressions assigned to those common emotions. Oddly, I have read and seen other books on body posture or body language, but I never encountered a book that describes the facial expressions until I got this one, and isn 't that the most obvious place to look for clues about what another person is thinking or feeling? , What a great idea! The writer of this book is the person who inspired the television series '' The Lie to Me , and this book also discusses micro-expressions. The book is not overly complex and talks in an easy way about emotions and expressions.

   Just a heads up
I have not completed this book, but I am in far enough to know the full potential of it, and let me tell you that after the first read you won t be reading people left and right. That will require years of reading and computer programs, and training. But if you practice this book and study its contents, I believe you will improve the way that you live and who you are in the world.

   Emotions Revealed
I am not sure how well this book helps me read other people's emotions, but it is sure helping me read my own. I realize that I am spending way too much time stewing over the past or projecting fear into the future and missing the present moment. By becoming aware of my mental movements, I find it much easier to redirect my facial chatter into more positive and constructive pathways.

   Understanding emotions
It is very interesting that I can now understand how a person feels from the muscles of the face. Since I liked what the author says, I bought his second book titled Telling Lies. This book is based on a niche area. For those who are interested, they will probably like it.

   Truly revealing
I have an autistic son and this book made me understand that emotionally what goes on with him. I can sometimes catch a glimpse of fear or sadness in his reactions that helps me to handle him a little better.

less informative than I had hoped for but still a good read. Lets face it
A little disappointed, less informative than I had hoped for, but still a good read. Lets face it, at the end you are still going to find this interesting and not to be able to use the skill for yourself.

Didn’t help but Joe Navarro’s book did!
I am always looking for ways to describe facial expressions in my writing. This was not a good choice. There was lots of talk about this subject, but few photos that were convincing arguments for how each was intended to reflect. A book I highly recommend for this info and tens of helpful photos and clear explanations is Joe Navarro's What Says Every Body ''.
