Edited by Abel Debritto, the definitive collection of poems from an influential writer whose transgressive legacy and raw, funny, and acutely observant writing has left an enduring mark on modern culture.
Few writers have so brilliantly and poignantly conjured the desperation and absurdity of ordinary life as Charles Bukowski. Resonant with his powerful, perceptive voice, his visceral, hilarious, and transcendent poetry speaks to us as forcefully today as when it was written. Encompassing a wide range of subjects--from love to death and sex to writing--Bukowski's unvarnished and self-deprecating verse illuminates the deepest and most enduring concerns of the human condition while remaining sharply aware of the day to day.
With his acute eye for the ridiculous and the troubled, Bukowski speaks to the deepest longings and strangest predilections of the human experience. Gloomy yet hopeful, this is tough, unrelenting poetry touched by grace.
This is Essential Bukowski.

This is hardly essential '' Bukowski. It is, instead, a selection of his most bland and unstressed pieces. It is backed by Bukowski if it is sanitized. For the real deal, read any of his own collections.

Respect
Derived From Web , Mar 3, 2021
I have a tremendous amount of respect for this writer, because he loved and needed poetry and wrote a ton of it. If I could give stars for this I would give five. But because this review is a subjective one, I give it a star because I do not enjoy his poetry. I don 't find it relatable ''.

Can You Tell Me What Time it Is (or Should I Just Go Shoot Myself?"
Derived From Web , Dec 23, 2020
Well, the headline isn 't from Bukowski, but the line that came to mind when reading this man's poetry! Inspired by his Roll the Dice poem, recited on YouTube very well, I bought this book. The book itself is beautiful in terms of the font and the ease of reading. But this Bukowski guy... wow... we've seen the likes of him on street corners alcoholic, cigarette breath, unshaven, unkempt, barely surviving in the sewers of society. And yet this loser has no shortage of girlfriends and whores to keep him company, no shortage of smokes, no shortage of alcohol and no money for the rent. Basically, a late worker can not keep a job, late to society. But he also captures Nihilism extremely well, the sad endings of peoples societal values we would rather not acknowledge or admit. I'm glad I read the book, but the question now is what I do with it? Do I get rid of it or save it?

The Treasure
Derived From Web , Jun 6, 2020
What can I say more? When I began reading in English, I can now truly enjoy this kind of art. He is a little bit similar than me, he is also the one who tells how I live is just what is living. Life is now just enjoy what it is now, become nothing. People sometimes say : I am very simple person, but I see what life is just now : life. Beautiful masterpiece by the artist. Charles Bukowski - Dankeschön Charles Bukowski!

Good book

This is a great book to have if you enjoy Bukowski in a collection, but by no means does this capture everything he’s expressed over his other books. I would use it for the Bukowski reading starter.

I had read a few of his poems and was interested in buying a book of his poems as an introduction, but the only thing about it is avoiding the purchase.

Every Bukowski lover needs this!

Can I say something else? It was not pretty. But bukowski was not pretty. He didn 't want to feel everything unicorn and rainbows, he wanted to get something out of it.
