Book Overview

The author, Chris McMullen, Ph.D., has over twenty years of experience teaching math skills to physics students. He prepared this comprehensive workbook (with full solutions to every problem) to share his strategies for mastering calculus. This workbook covers a variety of essential calculus skills, including:

  • derivatives of polynomials, trig functions, exponentials, and logarithms
  • the chain rule, product rule, and quotient rule
  • second derivatives
  • how to find the extreme values of a function
  • limits, including l'Hopital's rule
  • antiderivatives of polynomials, trig functions, exponentials, and logarithms
  • definite and indefinite integrals
  • techniques of integration, including substitution, trig sub, and integration by parts
  • multiple integrals
The goal of this workbook isn't to cover every possible topic from calculus, but to focus on the most essential skills needed to apply calculus to other subjects, such as physics or engineering

User needs very strong understanding of Algebra before attempting.
However, the example problems are fine, and very simple, and the matching questions in the test section are extremely difficult. The example is a 1 or 2 out of 10 on a scale of 1 to 8, with no instruction in between. Instead of adding more test questions, try to let the user practice easier problems and gradually build up to the difficult ones. It seemed to me that the test questions were designed for those who already know how to do the problem, in which case, they would not need the workbook.

Must buy for those who need review in Calculus
This is a must-have for those looking to review or prep for the next level math. Even if you're not a math expert, steps made sense and were easy to understand. Even though you probably read the book, you may not understand all the concepts. Even though he's only a math major, he's pretty good at it.

   calculus review
It's too good of a book for somebody who wants to recall well after 33 years out of a calculus class.

Good for the math library to build your skills on
This book is a great addition to any Calculus collection. The writer assumes that you are proficient with Algebra and the formulas, postulates, and theorems that accompany them, as well as all other Calculus books. If you have not completed Algebra and a good understanding of Trigonometry, then don't buy this or any other Calculus book. However, calculus is not a math toy to play with, without the basic foundation to start.

Too easy for college level but perfect for high school
This workbook is for PRACTICING not studying, I've used it for my calculus classes but found that it wasn't very helpful because their questions were relatively easy but they were definitely helpful in terms of refreshing your memory and tutoring high school students.

THIS IS ONE GREAT LITTLE BOOK!
This is a really delightful, well organized book, said Barbara Comstock. Author Chris McMullen has done a great job of reviewing the basic skills of calculus. Note that this is not a book showing the theory of why the Skills work. The course includes: First Derivatives, Second Derivatives, Extrema, Limits and Multiple Integrals. Each topic has several case studies showing how the skill was used. Especially nice was the fact that answers as well as complete solutions are in the back of the book, and that space is provided for solving each problem. The book includes about 150 problems for the reader to practice with.

Great tool to supplement your Calc I skills.
Like many other calculus workbooks, this one fulfills its purpose of honing your math skills by problem solving. Good job by the teacher, said Dr. Robert Smith, "steps are very well explained." I'm thrilled that the book is affordably priced so that students are not ripped off by the outlandish pricing of today's math textbooks, Tunick said. Thanks to Amazon. com.

   Practice solving calculus problems
This book provides a drill in techniques for solving calculus problems that students in introductory calculus classes will find themselves working on. The coverage is modest, but achieves its intended purpose.

   Excellent workbook
The book is titled "The Workbook: A Beginner's Guide to Excel." If you're looking for a conceptual understanding of this calculus, then you're not going to find it. Lots of detailed problems were worked out discussing techniques and methods used to solve them. Lots of exercises with detailed solutions at the end. It's a good supplement for calculus.
