I bought this for my 8 - year old son, who is a very good reader, but does not read on his own for pleasure. I thought, hmm, how can I get him to read independently? I am an avid reader myself and was never a problem for me. I noticed that he had brought home LEGO Star Wars themed graphic novels. I heard that graphic novels are a good way to attract reluctant readers more, so I thought we'd try this series, anything as long as he was reading words on a page for fun! Lo and behold, he read 2 of the books on his own unbidden during a car trip!

Disappointed...

My son loves the Amulet series, but was not so enthusiastic about the Explorer books. More like a cartoonish comic strip than a graphic novel.

Another great collection of stories...

But the Explorer series holds its own. This was not as good as Flight or Amulet, but it does bring a nice variety of stories. A bit dark... so not sure if this is recommended for younger children.

The stories are simple, but the artwork is almost overwhelming in its stunning beauty.

Some cool islands, but a fair amount of fluff for being short as it is

A few of these had good promise, but ended up feeling rushed and shallow because of it.

EDITED by Kazu - not written by The short stories are ok, but after being hooked on Amulet, I expected more connectedness.
