Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

In this landmark work of history and winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Joseph J. Ellis explores how a group of greatly gifted but deeply flawed individuals--Hamilton, Burr, Jefferson, Franklin, Washington, Adams, and Madison--confronted the overwhelming challenges before them to set the course for our nation.

The United States was more a fragile hope than a reality in 1790. During the decade that followed, the Founding Fathers--re-examined here as Founding Brothers--combined the ideals of the Declaration of Independence with the content of the Constitution to create the practical workings of our government. Through an analysis of six fascinating episodes--Hamilton and Burr's deadly duel, Washington's precedent-setting Farewell Address, Adams' administration and political partnership with his wife, the debate about where to place the capital, Franklin's attempt to force Congress to confront the issue of slavery and Madison's attempts to block him, and Jefferson and Adams' famous correspondence--Founding Brothers brings to life the vital issues and personalities from the most important decade in our nation's history.

   Great book!
This was a basic reading book for a library of congress required source class I took. It gave us background knowledge about the American Revolution, which helped us find primary source materials. I had to find two more copies to share with my sons. The book was both interesting and informative to read. Many parallels could be made between the beginning of our country and the things that are now happening.

   Things you need to know
I understand that the author isn 't exactly truthful. I was shocked to learn that when the Constitution was written, the population of South Carolina was half-slaves. I am sorry that Jefferson was a Yenta.

I enjoyed this book very much
I enjoyed this book very much ''. The specific time in our country's history is not covered in the high school. It was an outstanding, easy to read period from Jefferson's last term to Washington's election with all the inter-actions between the Federalists and the Republicans.

   Great introduction to the founders.
I would suggest it as a good beginning for anyone interested in looking at the beginning of the American government system of government and the men who founded the country and started a new era of government in the world. For a historian, Dr. Ellis has a clear, direct and most importantly, enjoyable voice in this volume. I highly recommend '' his book.

This is what happens when someone has access to a thesaurus
Founding Brothers tells several stories of some of the founding fathers. The stories were interesting but the language used was extremely distracting. I don 't know if the author wanted to match the hard words '' used in correspondence and speeches back in the 17 and 1800s, or if he had access to a really good thesaurus, but it was kind of ridiculous. If you don 't mind that, it is a decent book.

   Interesting and Enjoyable
I have read history, which brought me to sleep. This time it was not. Ellis blends the facts with characterizations, making history more of a story for the reader. What really happened in the Hamilton - Burr duel? What was said at the Jefferson Dinner that consummated the Legislative Deal to establish Washington D.C. as the Capital of the Nation? Thoughtprovoking, enjoyable and a good prelude to fuller biographies of these men and their times.

   THANK YOU FOUNDING FATHERS
Accentates how important it is now, then as it is now to have men in power that have VISION. Though they had almost absolute power, their integrity and motives were directed at creating a new COUNTRY, imagine creating a new country. Had the events shown in this book turned out differently, we could have High Tea at 4 : 00, and speak the King's English. Jolly good.... Bottom Line : You are reading how a small group of men, facing almost impossible odds, has transformed our country into what it is today. The same debates on the subject of “ Big Government ” vs. States rights to govern themselves, taxes, foreign policy are still wildly debated today... Fascinating reading, mainly the duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton, why it happened, the results of its outcome, and how ONE event can change everything.
