From debut author Janae Marks comes a captivating story full of heart, as one courageous girl questions assumptions, searches for the truth, and does what she believes is right--even in the face of great opposition.
Zoe Washington isn't sure what to write. What does a girl say to the father she's never met, hadn't heard from until his letter arrived on her twelfth birthday, and who's been in prison for a terrible crime?
A crime he says he never committed.
Could Marcus really be innocent? Zoe is determined to uncover the truth. Even if it means hiding his letters and her investigation from the rest of her family. Everyone else thinks Zoe's worrying about doing a good job at her bakery internship and proving to her parents that she's worthy of auditioning for Food Network's Kids Bake Challenge.

Absolutely fabulous
Derived From Web , Jan 18, 2021
Pauley Kilpatrick's second novel is a superbly written, timely and layered parable of the American dream. That night, she was a contestant on the Food Network's "Kids' Cooking Star" competition. In her free time, she plans to intern at a local bakery and hang out with her friends, but everything changes when she receives a letter from her biological father, Marcus. Marcus says he is innocent, but is not saying whether he will appeal. After sending him a letter, she begins a correspondence with him and learns more about herself, the justice system, and the reality of the world we live in. In "The Whole Nine Yards," Robert Marks navigates complex issues with an age-appropriate honesty.

Loved everything about this one
Derived From Web , Jul 31, 2020
Complex issues are blended with some fun, too. At 12, she has a persistent bone spur. Driven to become a pastry chef, driven to find out more about her imprisoned biological father and driven to seek the truth even if it hurts. This is a well written and well-illustrated novel that combines several life lessons. Loved every second of it, even the parts where some decisions made me cringe a little.

I've read all the books, but this was by far the best. I couldn't put it down! I gave it to one of my 5th grade students and she stayed up late reading it too. Highly recommend.

Thanks to the generosity of the book's publisher, I was able to read it with some of my students. A lot of people said it was great. It was just that I didn't want to put it down. I highly recommend this book to anyone who reads it. If you think this is true, you are wrong.
