When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family's Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father's hidden desires. Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.

A beautiful way to read a memoir
For a very long time, I have been a fan of Alison, ever since Dykes to Watch Out For was a local gay comic strip in a syndicated newspaper in Denver, CO. This more personal story flows like a stream of consciousness, not only through a period of history, but also through a number of questions and postulations. Tough questions are posed, but as in so many cases where we interrogate our own pasts, particularly when some of the players are no longer living, the only conclusions we can reach are personal. Loops can be closed, but are internal. It is a treat to follow those loops as Alison tries to close them to her own satisfaction, and it's a treat to be let into the inner workings of such an erudite mind. The art adds a dimension to the memoir, into which I wish more could tap, and the level of detail and attention to art is a testament to how powerfully this story was felt by the artist. Thank you so much for the kind words!

The best book I ever read
Having been a Dykes fan for years, I was so sad when Alison stopped the series to focus on other writing. Fun Home is powerful, intimate, sad, heroic and a story of loss and survival. I am so delighted for her success and hope for more graphic novels to come. Alison moved from the outside as a human comic strip artist to the mainstream of the lesbian experience.

   Love this woman!
Alison Bechdel is a very well read, literary author. Meaning : I have to look some of her words in the dictionary. She also cites political books in literature and events in great history. I have read and enjoyed every book she has written, so it was a sincere gift to read this eloquent and entertaining memoir of her life. She manages to blend some deeply intimate and tragic events with her witty and spontaneous humor. All of her fans and anyone new to her craft will most certainly enjoy and be moved by this treasure of a book, regardless of sexual preference or if you have one at all! I highly recommend not having one, and I highly recommend this book, to all genders.

   It's all in the family.
This is one of those graphic novels that you can either linger for content or fly through for meaning. A fairly autobiographical work that is engaging in storytelling non-linear with layers and layers of thoughts to dive into. I love it especially for the portrayal of a family whose parents are both serious artists and the toll it takes on their artistic daughter. Every time I read it, I find something new.

   Amazing!!!!!
After seeing the graphic version of it, I read this musical broadway novel after seeing the graphic version of it. Little did I know that Fun Home would become my favorite graphic novel and show. Allison Bechdel is a huge fan of Jensen's Allison Bechdel. This book is so saddening, but there is such an unxplainable calmness to how she writes, which makes it even more interesting. A must read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

   Lovely
This one I love. At first, I worried that the zillion literary references would be confusing or jarring for the unfamiliar, but I actually ended up loving the little parallels, especially because Alison Bechdel managed to explain each reference clearly without being all wordy. Beautiful story about a very complicated relationship.

   Tough but beautiful book
The author takes on very difficult issues as she digs into her father's true nature in this autobiography of a family. She first shows these things from the perspective of a child and later from the perspective of a maturing young adult. The artwork is engaging and her attitude is one of warmth and searching that makes the reader feel real empathy with the characters in this book. This is not a children's comic book and deals with serious issues, but is a compelling read and a story told with great compassion through the comic medium.

   Insightful, richly allusive, exquisitely honest
I was perhaps most appreciative of Bechdel's ability to sympathize with her parents and humanize them, whose strengths and flaws are all on display here. This fairness and awareness strike me as unusual and very welcomed. And, of course, the ongoing discourse on and about literature, reading and thinking about books as part of daily life, felt so welcoming to this literary-minded reader, like sinking into a soft, comfortable reading nook. I also identify Bechdel's self-protective over-thinking with my own. I hope that young lesbian, queer and questioning women and precocious teens find their way to this book. Or at least children with a dictionary. A beautiful book.

Pornography Disguised as a Graphic Novel
I ordered this for a college class and when it arrived I was shocked to discover that it is pornography, disguised as a graphic novel. Very graphic oral sex depictions for the entire chapter are shown forAn. I am not sure why it is critically acclaimed.

   Great comic book
Am assigned to get this book for my English class, but I ended up enjoying this comic book more than I could have imagined. I would think of it now and then, would definitely recommend.
