Book Overview

A treasure trove of Bunny Mellon's garden design philosophy and advice from her personal archive.

Garden Secrets of Bunny Mellon is for anyone who has enjoyed time spent in a garden, from aspiring garden makers to those who manage large estates. This collection is comprised of extracts from Bunny's own writings and garden notes, as well as photographs and drawings from her archive.

Chapters are organized by Atmosphere (sky, horizon, shadows), Climate, Light, Space, Shape, Maintenance, and more―readers will feel as if Bunny Mellon has come alongside as a gardening guide and friend.

Bunny Mellon was of the affluent class and mingled along with her husband, Paul Mellon, in the circles of the East Coast gentry of the Kennedy and Reagan eras. But Mrs. Mellon, as she was respectfully called by those professional gardeners who worked with her most, wasn't snooty about social position or afraid to get her hands dirty in the rich soil of her family's Virginia farm. Beyond this, Bunny Mellon was known nationally and internationally as a style icon of her time, enjoying friendships with Givenchy, the Kennedys, and the like. Her personal passion was for design, and that was exhibited in her fashion and her garden.

A late acquaintance, Linda Holden learned that Bunny wanted to write a gardening book but never found the time. Searching the Read More chevron_right

   Most inspiring to a lazy gardener!
This beautiful book inspired me to be more creative in my garden! It will be the perfect gift for two people on my list to cross them off!

   It’s the little details!
Such a beautiful book! Offers a look at the details that make her gardens so special. Also, she loved that it included her personal photos and notes... and her little sketches tucked here and there. Absolutely loved it and I will add this one to my gift list this year!

   Disappointing
I have always admired Mellon's elegance and grace. Her White House Rose Garden is a classic Americana! And as an avid gardener, I was excited to find some inspiration for my own garden. But the book came and was what a disappointment! She would roll over in her grave if she knew that her name was used to sell such an inferior product! The pictures could have been made with such a beautiful theme so much better. The copy is flat, it looked semi-homemade! Who is this publisher and the worst of all her grandson was involved in bringing the book to print.

   This is a must for those who love nature and appreciate the genius of Bunny Mellon
Written with a personal insight into the mind that created the Rose Garden in the White House, it is simply beautiful. I adored this book and have ordered several for holiday gifts.

   The intuitive genius of Bunny Mellon from those who knew her well.
This new book is charming, insightful and unpretentious, just as Mrs. Mellon was herself. No dust jacket was required. I love the way the authors reached beyond the mechanics of planting and gardening techniques to expose Mrs. Mellon's values and intuition. I never met her, but this book makes me think that I knew her. All my gardening friends will receive this Christmas from Bunny Mellon's Secrets of Garden. Sara Douglas Hart '' ;

   Enjoyable garden story
After reading and loving the book The Gardens of Bunny Mellon, I was delighted to see that the same authors had written another book about Bunny Mellon's gardens. The new book Garden Secrets by Bunny Mellon is a dreadful disappointment. If I had not read the first book first, I would probably not feel so let down. Bunny Mellon's gardens are a masterpiece. Bunny Mellon has some of the same texts repeated from the first book. The cover is inviting and some of Bunny's drawings are delightful, but are few in number. The photos are not clear in most instances, but fuzzy and not the least bit inspiring. Save your money :

   Adore all things Bunny, but this misses the mark
I so wanted to love this book so much, but it fell short. Maybe we spoiled by the beauty of Rizzoli, but this felt too small, too quiet. Bunny Mellon is definitely not the iconic thing.
