Book Overview

With more than a thousand new entries and more than 2,300 word-frequency ratios, the magisterial fourth edition of this book-now renamed Garner's Modern English Usage (GMEU)-reflects usage lexicography at its finest. Garner explains the nuances of grammar and vocabulary with thoroughness, finesse, and wit. He discourages whatever is slovenly, pretentious, or pedantic.

GMEU is the liveliest and most compulsively readable reference work for writers of our time. It delights while providing instruction on skillful, persuasive, and vivid writing. Garner liberates English from two extremes: both from the hidebound purists who mistakenly believe that split infinitives and sentence-ending prepositions are malfeasances and from the linguistic relativists who believe that whatever people say or write must necessarily be accepted.

The judgments here are backed up not just by a lifetime of study but also by an empirical grounding in the largest linguistic corpus ever available. In this fourth edition, Garner has made extensive use of corpus linguistics to include ratios of standard terms as compared against variants in modern print sources. No other resource provides as comprehensive, reliable, and empirical a guide to current English usage.

For all concerned with writing and editing, GMEU will prove invaluable as a desk reference. Garner illustrates with actual Read More chevron_right

   Kindle Edition
After having looked at it and determined certain terms to resolve a problem, I can say that they did a good job with this edition. I am now able to refer to this edition anywhere I go. If you want convenience, do not hesitate. The GMEU is also an excellent resource for thoughtful and informative information.

   I like it!
It is a welcome addition to my growing library of books. I've received helpful tips and knowledge about English usage, which is essential for my job. I hope to improve my English and be able to properly use linking words and conjunctions. I also did not expect the book to be thick. But it's all right, as the contents are rich with helpful ideas!

   Terrible Construction - Torn Binding
Only review as to construction and NOT content. The bad one went back, and I ordered a replacement thinking that the first binding was a unicorn. I have also unpacked the repacement book and found that its binding is just torn. It goes back. Won't buy from Amazon as the whole lot is probably deficient.

   A fun browsing experience
Oddly, a few things about which I was truly curious did not appear in this book. For example, I was wondering if the verb to advocate, for which many people now mistakenly substitute the non-sensical to advocate, had mutated to the point where the incorrect version had become acceptable. If you love words and the English language, you will find this book very entertaining.

   Impressive!!
A most impressive piece of work... by a scholar who leans towards the lexicographic side of the prescriber battle, but acknowledges that the language should grow over time and not remain frozen in amber. For those who are serious students of the language, this would be a very valuable addition to your reference library. Authoritative!! : Like myself, the author is particularly annoyed by the obscurantist styie... full of pretension, bombast, verbosity and confusion.

   A word-lovers paradise
If you have an interest in etymology, grammar or language, this book is everything you could hope for and more. It can be used cover to cover or read as a reference. My one complaint is with the Kindle version, which is not particularly user-friendly if you want to use it as a reference. Ultimately, you can get to the information you want, but I wish that some more thought had been put into the ebook presentation.
