Book Overview

2020 ALA Alex Award Winner
2020 Stonewall -- Israel Fishman Non-fiction Award Honor Book

In 2014, Maia Kobabe, who uses e/em/eir pronouns, thought that a comic of reading statistics would be the last autobiographical comic e would ever write. At the time, it was the only thing e felt comfortable with strangers knowing about em. Now, Gender Queer is here. Maia's intensely cathartic autobiography charts eir journey of self-identity, which includes the mortification and confusion of adolescent crushes, grappling with how to come out to family and society, bonding with friends over erotic gay fanfiction, and facing the trauma and fundamental violation of pap smears.

Started as a way to explain to eir family what it means to be nonbinary and asexual, Gender Queer is more than a personal story: it is a useful and touching guide on gender identity--what it means and how to think about it--for advocates, friends, and humans everywhere.

It's also a great resource for those who identify as nonbinary or asexual as well as for those who know someone who identifies that way and wish to better understand. -- SLJ (starred review)

   Excellent and accessible, 14+
About this book there was a small scandal in my high school about my child's school... so I read it. A picture was captured by context and purported to be children instead of 2 mid-20s adults. The book itself is a delightful exploration of asexuality and what is meant to be non-binary. Very appropriate for Middle Schoolers, to discuss with high schoolers or read with them.

   A coming of age story
The graphic novel by author and artist Maia Kobabe's graphic comic Gender Queer '' is enlightening for all of us to read, but those who struggle to figure it out will LOVE this memoir!

   Relatable for other enby people
As a non-binary person who came out as an adult after years of not having the right words to describe myself and my discomfort, I identified strongly with many sentiments and memories. It was affirming to hear from another person who shared my experience with me. I recommend this to anyone who wants to understand better what it means to be non-binary or genderqueer, and thank the author for sharing this important work with eir courage.

   Transgender Journey
I loved this book for spouting the uncertainty and fear fraught with my own transgender Odyssey. We, all of us, search for home gender.

   Honest and brave
I bought this book to see what all the fuss was about. I can see why some people would find it offensive, as it is graphic and raw, and unlike anything else I've ever read. I had some uncomfortable moments reading this book ''. The raw honesty about sex and gender, however, was refreshing and brave and I am glad I read it.

   Bizarre
The themes in this book seem to be introduced as normal topics that all children explore while growing up. They are not first of all. And this is not a book that I would ever want to read to any child. The images of dreams, fantasies, human devices, artificial activity, etc. No '' are not suitable for any child nor for anyone actually. I read this book to find out what my county allowed to return to the library shelves, and I am very disappointed that they did so. We all need to stand up to this kind of raw pornography, which is introduced and encouraged for our children.

   Thank You
Never read a book that felt so me before this. I took screenshots of specific pages where I felt on the page like my own thoughts. I am 31 and came out as non-binary within the last year and it has been a journey. Seeing your journey on the pages was like drinking hot chocolate in winter. It was home. uou remerci uou for uou's generosity.

   Indoctrination
This book is not good for children and should not be in the schools, this is a disgrace, and the parents need to wake up.

Great book helps me understand my non-binary daughter
I read an article about this book, about how non-binary parents did not want to read it, and it is a handbook for offensive children that would help them feel not so alone.
