Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

When five kids take a walk along Lake Levart late one night, a mysterious wooden rowboat beckons them aboard. As if in a trance, they all step inside. But what they don't realize is that this enchanted boat is headed backward in time -- to the time of George Washington. And their neighborhood lake has been transformed into the icy Delaware River on the eve of the battle at Trenton. How will they ever find their way back to the safety of their familiar suburban homes?

As Matthew, Quentin, Hooter, Tony, and Katie experience the American Revolution firsthand and learn the sobering realities of war, Elvira Woodruff spins a compelling historic fantasy that won't soon be forgotten.

   Brings history to life
The book was recommended to my grandson by his 4th grade reading class. To discuss it with him, I also bought a copy and read it. It was a fun read while also teaching historical facts. It brought history to life in such a way that young children can easily understand. The chapters were short and easily held my grandson's attention. I also found some excellent study questions on line to use for our discussions. I plan to buy more books for him in this series. Hopefully it will encourage him to develop an interest in and love for history. I never developed this interest because of teachers who did not make history come alive, Raymond said. Young readers, I think this series of books could do just that for young students.

War isn't clear-cut Good vs Bad
My 2nd grader just read the entire book. I think it was a little advanced for him, too. He needed me to explain a lot of it to him. He also had trouble explaining the issues around the soldiers and how no war is just clear-cut good guys vs bad guys. I gave it 5 stars because it was a great book for a 10 year old. Just a tad too young to grasp it, I think. I'll save the negative review for the teacher.. But I'll save the negative review for the teacher. He really enjoyed the story, said Mills. I also think it did contribute to expanding his knowledgebase, he said.

If it says buy new, the book should be new.
This book is a classic, I read it as a kid and bought it for my 5th grader. I selected the “buy new” option for paperback and was sent a very “loved” book that was clearly not new. The book is of course still readable, but if I had wanted a used book, I would have ordered with the used book option. Really disappointed.

   Great book!
My homeschooled 4th grader read this book for our novel study. It is engaging and fun, said Blair. Many of the historical truths are buried there, even if they weren't pretty. I used a novel study teacher from packetpayteachers. com and it was a wonderful addition to our lessons on the Revolutionary War!

   Fun story
Loved this as a kid and bought for my kids. Brand new, in great condition, said Gillian. 10 year old read it one night and loved it.

They are very good and the students love them
Elvira Woodruff seems to have a knack for holding captive students at gunpoint, according to her Time Travel book. They are very good teachers, and the students love them, too.

This is a fun book with history and adventure.
This book was a favorite with my youngest child. Now I have a grandson who is going to love it too. It's a historical fiction book where boys from today go back to the time of the Revolutionary War and George Washington crossing the Potomac River. It's great to read it aloud and make it a family adventure.
