Book Overview

The first general consumer book ever on the powerful, award-winning, scientifically proven new system of intervention that is turning the recovery field on its head.

Historically there have been few options available for individuals seeking help for treatment-resistant loved ones suffering from substance abuse.Co-author Dr. Robert Meyers spent ten years developing a treatment program that helps Concerned Significant Others (CSOs) both improve the quality of their lives and to learn how to make treatment an attractive option for their partners who are substance abusers. Get Your Loved One Sober describes this multi-faceted program that uses supportive, non-confrontational methods to engage substance abusers into treatment. Called Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT), the program uses scientifically validated behavioral principles to reduce the loved one's substance use and to encourage him or her to seek treatment. Equally important, CRAFT also helps loved ones reduce personal stress and introduce meaningful, new sources of satisfaction into their life.Key Features: CRAFT is more effective than other types of interventions. This breakthrough new system is sweeping the recovery field. This is its first introduction to the general public.Contains simple exercises readers can practice at their own pace, with no costly or heart-breaking interventions.Proven successful for numerous addictions, not just alcoholism.

An absolute MUST-READ for anyone who loves someone with a substance abuse disorder.
This book is a must-read for anyone who has a substance abuse problem with an individual. It is based on the community reinforcement and family training program, listed on the National Registry of evidence-based programs and practices of SAMHSA with a success rate of 64%! I have personally experienced the life-changing effects of CRAFT in the behavioral health field as well as a mother and a wife. I give a copy of this book to every loved one of a substance abuser that I know and am thrilled when I see people, families and communities improve their relationships and their lives. If you were looking for help... you found it!

Not enough science about the disease of alcoholism
This book should not be bought. One method called to get your husband to not drink, wear his favorite teddy really? This 1950 is considered a major shift.

Dealing With The Alcoholic Just Became Easier
The method of dealing with an alcoholic in the book was very useful and made more sense than yelling and hateful remarks.

   Save lives
For decades, Robert Meyer has been a champion of community reinforcement and family therapy. This book has done more than Alanon and other combined programs to encourage individuals seeking treatment to seek help and engage in treatment.

   This book encourages codependency
This book seems to promote codependency and excessive responsibility. I think a better book would be Codependence and the power of Detachment.

This is a how-to book and will be music to the ears of those who have been told they can't do anything to help change their love
This is a how-to book and will be music to the ears of those who have been told that they can 't do anything to help change their loved ones's drinking or drugging behaviour.

Don't but this in Kindle Version
I love what I read in this book, but because I bought the kindle version, I can 't read anything that is typed or written in the small example boxes. It is very frustrating.

If you tell your loved one that you would like them to stop drinking ...
The summary of this book is that if you tell your loved one that you would like them to stop drinking and that you would spend more time with them if they did, they will stop. Yes, it is a bunch of baloney. If you're talking about someone who is truly addicted, don 't buy this book.

   Terrible
I wish I would have read the negative reviews on this model! It is bizarre that the SMART friends and family workbook put this recommendation when they placed so much emphasis on not blaming themselves and taking care of themselves. If you are emotionally exhausted, mentally and spiritually living with someone with an addiction problem, don 't read this book! It is indignant and quite frankly out of touch with even being published in 2003. The suggestion to reward myself is something straight out of the 1950s with reading or buying a romance novel.

   Life changing
This book was recommended to me in an addiction support group and I am so grateful. Even after reading the first few chapters, my life started getting better. The biggest thing I learned is that I can be happy even without changing my drinker. I learned new ways to approach the problem, rather than fighting and yelling that leaves both of us upset. If you are researching this book, this is clearly something you are fighting with. 1010 recommends :
