Book Overview

The giant squid is one of the most elusive creatures in the world. As large as whales, they hide beyond reach deep within the sea, forcing scientists to piece together their story from those clues they leave behind.

An injured whale's ring-shaped scars indicate an encounter with a giant squid. A piece of beak broken off in the whale's belly; a flash of ink dispersed as a blinding defense to allow the squid to escape-- these fragments of proof were all we had . . . until a giant squid was finally filmed in its natural habitat only two years ago.

In this beautiful and clever nonfiction picture book about the giant squid, Candace Fleming and Eric Rohmann explore, both visually and poetically, this hidden creature's mysterious life.

   Truly a remarkable book!
Beautiful illustrations, combined with lyrical poetic texts, make this a great candidate for both the Caldecott Medal and the Sibert Medal, maybe even the Newbery. Fleming uses poetry to convey information about this unusual and fascinating animal, about which scientists still know so little. While factual, the text reads like a dramatic adventure story. I have appreciated the fact that Fleming makes it clear what facts have been confirmed about the giant squid and those that still await discovery. Rohmann's mysterious pictures highlight the movement and size of this beautiful animal. And the fold-out page pops out at the right moment, giving the reader the most complete look at the animal in the whole book. This strategy creates an air of mystery that fits perfectly with the text and the many unanswered questions that scientists still have about this animal. A cover of a book is a winner from cover to cover.

   Disappointing
This was a Christmas present for a very bright and boy a present-in-full '' gift. He is fascinated by the giant squid and reads everything he can find about the giant squid. He loved the pictures but was not impressed by the small amount of information printed on the squid. In fact, within the first five minutes of opening my gift, he whispered to his mother that he had found a discrepancy in a small piece of information and was somewhat deflated with the gift.

If you love the deep ocean creatures
After the 3rd time I got this book out of the school library, I borrowed it for my daughter. This book makes the squid appear very mysteriously on each page on parts of the squid. It gives you the deep ocean vibe.

This one is cool, but very unusual.

   Good for the price
Rhyming was fun, but words are complicated unless read by a standard-leveled, upper elementary student. Pictures fed into the mystery, I liked.
