Book Overview

As if lost in the soft, bewitching world of fairy tale, Maggie Smith conceives and brings forth this metaphysical Baedeker, a guidebook for mother and child to lead each other into a hopeful present. Smith's poems affirm the virtues of humanity: compassion, empathy, and the ability to comfort one another when darkness falls. 'There is a light, ' she tells us, 'and the light is good.' -- D. A. Powell

Smith's voice is clear and unmistakable as she unravels the universe, pulls at a loose thread and lets the whole thing tumble around us, sometimes beautiful, sometimes achingly hard. Truthful, tender, and unafraid of the dark. . . . --Ada Lim n

It's Smith's dynamically precise and vivid images, and her uncanny ability to find just the right word or action to crack open our known experience, that make Good Bones an extraordinary book. (She) demonstrates what happens when an abundance of heart and intelligence meets the hands of a master craftsperson, reminding us again that the world, for a true poet, is blessedly inexhaustible. --Erin Belieu

I am so happy I bought this book of poems!
Sometimes I hear these poems outlaid and always think, feel and think something new.
   Good Bones: accessible but disappointing
Good Bones is a highly accessible volume of poetry with some beautiful images. I loved the image of the good bones that speak of past surface injuries. For me, however, many of the poems lacked depth and complexity and left me feeling flat and somewhat disappointed.
   Gorgeous imagery
Maggie Smith's poem Good Bones '' went viral for good reason, but is only one wonderful poem in her third collection. Themes of motherhood, fear and loss resonate through the use of delicate imagery and a beautiful ear for language. Today, buy this book!
It was like a fine piece of jewelry or a beautiful painting
I ate it just like that. It was like a different piece of jewelry or a beautiful painting. The subject of motherhood and the softness and strength that a mother has to balance for her children resonated with me. The poems about the girl and the Hawk on the mountain are beautiful. This book will stay with you just achingly beautiful. I hope it was a novel ''.
