Book Overview

Dataviz--the new language of business

A good visualization can communicate the nature and potential impact of information and ideas more powerfully than any other form of communication.

For a long time dataviz was left to specialists--data scientists and professional designers. No longer. A new generation of tools and massive amounts of available data make it easy for anyone to create visualizations that communicate ideas far more effectively than generic spreadsheet charts ever could.

What's more, building good charts is quickly becoming a need-to-have skill for managers. If you're not doing it, other managers are, and they're getting noticed for it and getting credit for contributing to your company's success.

In Good Charts, dataviz maven Scott Berinato provides an essential guide to how visualization works and how to use this new language to impress and persuade. Dataviz today is where spreadsheets and word processors were in the early 1980s--on the cusp of changing how we work. Berinato lays out a system for thinking visually and building better charts through a process of talking, sketching, and prototyping.

This book is much more than a set of static rules for making visualizations. It taps into both well-established and cutting-edge research in visual perception and neuroscience, as well as the emerging field of visualization Read More chevron_right

   Outstanding Reference and Resource!
Years ago, in a development program, I was asked to draw something that represented me. Drawing from all my visual, artistic and creative skills... If you can relate, this book is for you. To be clear, this is not a per se beginner's guidebook. The beauty of this book is in the author's immensely readable writing style, the system of thinking visually to build better charts that he presents in the book and the use of many examples to make his points. On p. 12, the author states, I hope that this book will become a well-worn, dog-eared companion. After a few weeks, my copy is already in this state.

good charts – good book too...
It is an easy read. I have quite a few data visualization books. Berinato adds a business perspective as well as good sense. Not bad skills in the today overloaded workplace to have.

   Awkward
The book shape is just awkward to hold. Sometimes content continued a few pages later instead of the next page's bad layout. Many graphics had an unreadably small print. In there is some good material : One should be able to absorb and more comfortably read with better execution. At this point, the material seems dated. Sure, people are still using Excel, now Google Sheets and other software that wasn 't printed when this book was created. Today, I would expect that more people are talking with PythonJupyter and R and this could be where exploratory graphics would be done. The best charts are often interactive.

Great book to understand the importance of different visualizations.
I use this book as a guide for the class of data visualization, it provides different examples on great graphs and when to use it. While the content is very similar to other books on the subject, the way it is written makes it easy to explain and integrate into daily practice.

   Effective and practical
I used it to quickly gain an edge over my peers, and my presentations showed a dramatic difference in being effective. The author included many practical stories to which you could relate easily. This book will also help you with your work presentations.

If you read only one book on dataviz, let it be this one
I have read several books on data visualization, but this is a great summary of literature out there. If you don 't have time to dive into Dataviz and Design, read this article It will get you 80% there ''.

A page turner sure to make improve charts everywhere
Easy to read and insightful. There are some good tips on how to go about the planning process and really make impactful charts. Seems to be more geared towards info graphic charts that are created and static rather than updated continuously. However, most of the points still apply.
