Book Overview

If you've got a good idea, and you know it's going to work, go ahead and do it.
The inspiring story of Grace Hopper--the boundary-breaking woman who revolutionized computer science--is told told in an engaging picture book biography.

Who was Grace Hopper? A software tester, workplace jester, cherished mentor, ace inventor, avid reader, naval leader--AND rule breaker, chance taker, and troublemaker. Acclaimed picture book author Laurie Wallmark (Ada Byron Lovelace and the Thinking Machine) once again tells the riveting story of a trailblazing woman. Grace Hopper coined the term computer bug and taught computers to speak English. Throughout her life, Hopper succeeded in doing what no one had ever done before. Delighting in difficult ideas and in defying expectations, the insatiably curious Hopper truly was Amazing Grace . . . and a role model for science- and math-minded girls and boys. With a wealth of witty quotes, and richly detailed illustrations, this book brings Hopper's incredible accomplishments to life.

   Fascinating lady
Who knew Grace Hopper invented the first computer code that actual humans could read and understand? A delightful book about a beautiful person. Very well done!

   The internal misogyny is real
They're beautiful. This book has a tendency, however, to claim that being involved in STEM means you avoid being a homemaker or dressing in a feminine way. I found myself reading the book aloud to my Girl Scout troop to remind them that you don't need to be a career driven to be a feminist and that you don't have to eschew having a family. You can be a scientist and mother. It seems short sighted to make a feminist book that pushes people to think that feminists have to look a certain way or live a certain way.

Very interesting - probably best for age 8 or above
I love reading books about smart women, which inspire me, my daughter and my grand daughter. So many times, women's contributions are not recognized. Kudos to the authors who do the research and bring us these books. It will be a few years before I can read to my granddaughter or she can read to herself.

Good intro to girls in math and women in science
Illustrations and story are well matched for this telling the start of the ordinary languages used to program computers. That a marine female realized the need for hands-on computer use rather than having a bottle neck in the form of waiting for programmers to enter data can inspire young women. Importantly, it can also inspire young men to make their mark on the upcoming young people. Quoting Grace If you have a good idea and you know that it will work, go ahead and do it.

This is a WONDERFUL book about a woman we should know more about. I bought it for my granddaughter, but my husband and i were both fascinated by it. I believe that Yale University is renaming the former Calhoun Hall for Grace, an honor well deserved, I realized after reading the book.

   So great, we ordered two!
I ordered this book for my children but my husband loved it so much that I had to order a second copy for him to keep at work. Full of natural Grace Hopper quotes and quips of funny illustration. Recommendation highly recommended.
