   A masterpiece of literature
The way takes a character that you thought you knew and adds layers upon layers of depth to him is absolutely astounding. This is probably the best character analysis I've ever read. It's not light reading, and it's not a typical action-heavy fantasy novel, but it's one of the most intellectual and thought provoking novels out there.

   One of Gardner's best
Grendel is not really a story about a monster, it's the story of an isolated person trying to make sense of the world, he said. Smashing success? His internal conflicts drive the story, and his attempts to understand the universe and his place in it are maddeningly complex and saddening. If you're familiar with the book, then you should probably enjoy this. Even if you have read the entire poem, Grendel is easy to understand on its own. It's got some incredibly abstract and complex parts that will baffle you, but they exist for a reason.

   Gardner delivers
He is a paradox - a beautiful one, and his take on life is so wonderfully depressing. I read it just because I wanted to see how he practiced what he preached, and I wasn't disappointed, he said.

   It is my favorite book
A passionate novelist, Saul Bellow's "Truly a unique novel." I read this in high school and was immediately drawn to the unique way that Gardner painted his world. The short story is amazing and provides a nihilistic perspective that is not very prevalent in today's literature and media, said Pauley. I have read this again as an adult and it is just as relevant today as it was when I was a kid. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

   Fast!
Speedy shipping but there was a little more wear and tear than I thought it would have. Coolest thing ever, Tunick said.

The worst item I have ever rec'd through Amazon.
The product took three weeks to reach Me2. The product looked like a parody. I wanted to give it as a present, but it looks so awful I am not4. It's just that I have to go out and buy another present.

   A Fascinating Read
The book covers his entire existence from point A to point B, and never fails to enthrall along the way. His writing is sophisticated without being difficult. Dialogue is smooth, metaphors solid, and unconventionally gorgeous, Raymond said. I believe banning books is a cowardly act, but some moments may be unsuitable for young readers, he said. On a personal note, I cannot help but compare and contrast the two.

The other side of the Beowulf tale
In "The Lord of the Rings," John Gardner's Grendel is the main character, the grotesque, the perspective of the beast himself. While there is no clear background on his origin, his thoughts and impressions are on full display. What unfolds is a troubled, emotionally detached individual who seems incapable of connecting with anyone or anything else. Anger isolation and drive the creature to horrible acts viewed as evil, while he struggles to understand his place in the world.

   A Horror Story
The story was created from a different perspective, said Blair. As I'm writing this review, I hear the sound of bones crushing, screaming people and Grendel's anguished voice. It was a terrible, terrible, terrible parody. Add in some gruesome and educational videos and you have the makings of a truly disturbing horror film. It was a short, quick read, and I'm not complaining. I'm tempted to read Beowulf again, after about 45 years, because I'm not a fan of the original.

I had this book 24 hours after I ordered. Unbelievable ! Thank you for amazing service.
I'm going to have to go back and read it on the weekend. I fell in love with Beowulf so much that I had to read more. I read all the comments so I understand some parts are quite disturbing, that's helpful to me because I'm squeamish but now fully prepared, Mr. Booher told us.
