Defining Decadence
The legacy of Gustav Klimt

A century after his death, Viennese artist Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) still startles with his unabashed eroticism, dazzling surfaces, and artistic experimentation. This monograph gathers all of Klimt's major works alongside authoritative art historical commentary and privileged access to the artist's archive with some 179 letters, cards, writings, and other documents.

With top quality illustration, including new photography of the celebrated Stoclet Frieze, the book follows Klimt through his prominent role in the Secessionist movement of 1897, his candid rendering of the female body, and his lustrous golden phase when gold leaf brought a shimmering tone and texture to such beloved works as The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, also known as The Woman in Gold.

Through luminous spreads and carefully curated details, the monograph traces the repertoire of Japanese, Byzantine, and allegorical stimuli that informed Klimt's flattened perspectives, his symbolic vocabulary, and his mosaic-like textures. Drawing upon Read More chevron_right

   Gorgeous!
Leave it to Taschen to produce a really nice little book... more a bedside book than a coffee-table book... but this has so many wonderful images. Even a fold-out image! For the price - fantastique buy!

Needs A Simple, Definitive Listing Of Page(s) On Which Finished Artwork Is Visually Reproduced
The book has been divided into 7 sections, whose subject matter is only identified by the often vague title assigned to the section. Though there is an index for identifying where a particular work of art is located, it is often confusing due to how the index is constructed. For example, it lumps paintings and friezes together, but lists completed and titled drawings separately. It includes visual references further, with no distinction between any and all versus narrative. In other words, what is missing is a simple listing of titled, finished artwork and the page number on which its visual representation is contained.

Not a fan of the printing
This book is arranged so that 23 of a painting will be on a page and 13 will be on the opposite page. The book is thick, so the crease into the binding is deep and it is impossible to get a full view of the paintings as a result.

   Offered Replacement
The book is new and is in good condition. Sometimes mail does get lost, but this was by far the smoothest interaction I had to resloved and issue like this.

   Great for the price
Great little book, but don 't confuse it with the $125 copy with 3x the size! This can be easily reproduced and the paintings were handled nicely.
