Book Overview

Guess what -- Gary Paulsen was being kind to Brian. In Guts, Gary tells the real stories behind the Brian books, the stories of the adventures that inspired him to write Brian Robeson's story: working as an emergency volunteer; the death that inspired the pilot's death in Hatchet; plane crashes he has seen and near-misses of his own. He describes how he made his own bows and arrows, and takes readers on his first hunting trips, showing the wonder and solace of nature along with his hilarious mishaps and mistakes. He shares special memories, such as the night he attracted every mosquito in the county, or how he met the moose with a sense of humor, and the moose who made it personal. There's a handy chapter on Eating Eyeballs and Guts or Starving: The Fine Art of Wilderness Nutrition. Recipes included. Readers may wonder how Gary Paulsen survived to write all of his books -- well, it took guts. From the Hardcover edition.

   Gary Paulson has GUTS
What a book. Gary's open account of his life makes you appreciate the details he puts in theBrian books. Gary was the one who lived most of the experiences. I read this book to my son and he loved it. He thought that he wouldn't care for a biography. He was intersted in the biographies of other people because of reading this book. Wow! You will be happy with the book.

   When I thought I was an 'Outdoorsman', I wasn't !
I have been a boy scout, an Eagle Scout, a camper, and a cetra, but I have not lived and have only existed on what I could get in a wilderness. I haven't eaten guts, eyeballs or entrails. I don't understand what it takes to become an outdoors man. Living off the land in a wilderness is more difficult than I thought. A lot more! The book GUTS spelled it out clearly for me. I hope that I never have to be dependent on the wilderness. I learned a lot from reading his book and his experiences.

Who doesn't love this guy and his stories!
I loved Gary's books and read them many times as a child. Imagine my surprise when I found this gem, I' ve had guy friends tell me that they need to read it when I'm done, they were big fans of his books growing up! Just do it, if you' ve considered getting this. I'd love to hear this guy retell these stories around a campfire.

Doesn’t live up to Gary Paulsen Standardd
Didn't finish. I knew it wasn't a typical Gary Paulsen book, but this one just couldn't hold my interest.

Good, short read by Gary Paulsen (True to his own life stories)
It's a great book for Gary Paulsen fans. He retells many true events and experiences which later were used in his fiction novels.

Recommended for any reader regardless of age or gender.
I got the Hatchet books for my cousin at Christmas when I was younger. I saw this book there. We both enjoyed this book and we are in our 30's. I have a learning disability that makes reading difficult. Gary Paulson makes you feel like you are watching the story, rather than just reading it. The experiences he has had in his life are amazing. I would recommend this book to anyone. Some stories talk about people dying in tragic manners. You don't need to have read any of the books to enjoy this one.
