Book Overview

Respond to the call of ham radio

Despite its old-school reputation, amateur radio is on the rise, and the airwaves are busier than ever. That's no surprise: being a ham is a lot of fun, providing an independent way to keep in touch with friends, family, and new acquaintances around the world--and even beyond with its ability to connect with the International Space Station Hams are also good in a crisis, keeping communications alive and crackling during extreme weather events and loss of communications until regular systems like cell phones and the internet are restored. Additionally, it's enjoyable for good, old-fashioned tech geek reasons--fiddling with circuits and bouncing signals off the ionosphere just happens to give a lot of us a buzz

If one or more of these benefits is of interest to you, then good news: the new edition of Ham Radio For Dummies covers them all In his signature friendly style, longtime ham Ward Silver (Call Sign N AX)--contributing editor with the American Radio Relay League--patches you in on everything from getting the right equipment and building your station (it doesn't have to be expensive) to the intricacies of Morse code and Ohm's law. In addition, he coaches you on how to prepare for the FC-mandated licensing exam and tunes you up for ultimate glory in the ham radio hall of fame as a Radiosport competitor Read More chevron_right

   Good review of Ham radio
Haven 't been licensed since I was a kid, since I was a licensed kid. Although I am an engineer, I wanted to get “ up to speed ” on the latest Gizmos and tech in the amateur radio world. Good book!

   Excellent book
Initially, I checked an older edition of the library and read it before receiving my ticket. I bought this significantly expanded and updated edition because of the wealth and breadth of information it offers. After rereading this book for years, I have been a ham and still find new things to try after rereading this book. Highly recommended. Highly recommended.

   Radio savvy husband was impressed
Husband was preparing for his ham radio license test and needed a source to cover all the basics. After trying books from the library, I bought him this and he said it was the best book he had seen, very helpful and organized for easy reading and added resource and reference. All other books had been too disjointed and difficult to find needed information. Aced his exam with 100% correct answers Aced his exam.

   Wide ranging and informative
The book covers a wide spectrum of the ham radio hobby. Easy to understand for a beginner, but with enough depth for the experienced hammer.

I really like this book ''. I am a new ham and this helped me establish the basics. I have been reading it from front to back, and I have been reading it from front to back. My only comment would be that chapter 4 is the beginning of some very helpful information.

   Good reference material
Content is good, from very basic to advanced. Arraigned well. Can be used as a reference type book, As typical with all dummies series, the physical quality is somewhat lacking, as is typical with all the dummies series. Very flimsy cover and pages.

Since the first edition, I have been a fan of these books. I have distributed dozens of them to my classes teaching ham radio, teaching about ham radio. The new 4th edition contains much more information on every aspect of ham radio, making it a good reference to have on your bookshelf.
