From stories of resurrected mummies and thousand-year-old curses to powerful pharaohs and the coveted treasures of the Great Pyramids, ancient Egypt has had an unfaltering grip on the modern imagination. Now, in Egyptian Mythology, Geraldine Pinch offers a comprehensive introduction that untangles the mystery of Egyptian Myth.
Spanning Ancient Egyptian culture--from 3200 BC to AD 400--Pinch opens a door to this hidden world and casts light on its often misunderstood belief system. She discusses the nature of myths and the history of Egypt, from the predynastic to the postpharaonic period. She explains how Egyptian culture developed around the flooding of the Nile, or the inundation, a phenomenon on which the whole welfare of the country depended, and how aspects of the inundation were personified as deities. She explains that the usually cloudless skies made for a preoccupation with the stars and planets. Indeed, much early Egyptian mythology may have developed to explain the movement of these celestial bodies. She provides a timeline covering the seven stages in the mythical history of Egypt and outlining the major events of each stage, such as the reign of the sun God. A substantial A to Z section covers the principal themes and concepts of Egyptian mythology as well as the most Read More chevron_rightIt takes about 5 Hours and 9 minutes on average for a reader to read Handbook Of Egyptian Mythology. Very interesting !

Besides the mythological side, includes a ton of information, but also history as well. I like that the author remains objective and admits that certain points are merely theories or speculation and not fact. What is important in dealing with the mysteries of the ancient world.

More of a glossary than a mythology book.
Derived From Web , May 1, 2021
The book is really kind of terrible. It is written in an incoherent and confusing way. I expected it to have egyptian myths and the origin of these myths. Instead, it is more of a glossary of names of the gods and goddesses.

Read this first
Derived From Web , Dec 14, 2020
First of all, this book is not a comprehensive reference for all known 1,500 or so gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt. It is a fantastic, well-thought-out overview of mythology, which is positioned in the middle between the written books for children and books written for someone already in a graduate program in the subject. I wish I had read it first.

Not An Anthology of Egyptian Myths
Derived From Web , Jul 11, 2020
I thought that this book would be an anthology of Egyptian myths, with some historical and cultural context to help explain unfamiliar or obscure concepts. Instead, more than a quarter of this book is a summary version of Egyptian history from the pre-dynastic period to the end of the Roman period, followed by a section summarizing myths under particular themes and ends with a section listing individual Egyptian deities in alphabetical order. There is a second section listing additional reading resources, but I did not intend to buy a bibliography. Almost all the photos are useless, so they are virtually inscrutable as illustrations. Most photos are set in parts of the book that may or may not correspond to the nearby text. The deity list could be helpful as a companion piece to other books, but I would not consider this book as a standalone reference.

My father absolutely loved this-- Read it a second time almost immediately
Derived From Web , Dec 9, 2019
My father is very interested in Egyptian religion and ancient culture, and this book was something he enjoyed beyond what I even expected. He brought it up several times and said that he would read it immediately after he finished it the first time. He is an avid reader and an honest critic, so I would definitely recommend anything to which he gives two thumbs up!

Relevant especially today

If we had a more detailed understanding of what actually went on during that time period, as opposed to dismissing truths as '' myths '', my civilization would be much better off. Distorted versions of this history were fed to me during high school and college. This work helps to keep that record straight and is a very good resource.
