Once
In a big city called New York
In a bustling neighborhood
There was an empty lot.
Nevaeh called it the haunted garden.

Harlem Grown tells the inspiring true story of how one man made a big difference in a neighborhood. After seeing how restless they were and their lack of healthy food options, Tony Hillery invited students from an underfunded school to turn a vacant lot into a beautiful and functional farm. By getting their hands dirty, these kids turned an abandoned space into something beautiful and useful while learning about healthy, sustainable eating and collaboration.

Five years later, the kids and their parents, with the support of the Harlem Grown staff, grow thousands of pounds of fruits and vegetables a year. All of it is given to the kids and their families. The incredible story is Read More chevron_right

   Beautiful illustrations
But the story was perfect for spring, perfect for conversation and talking about how a plant grows. I've always found the book to be a good read, even though it's based on a true story.

   Lovely and true story
This book is a no brainer. The book is illustrated by Graham and illustrated by lovely illustrators. But mostly, it is true and needed story for our time, and proceeds go to a garden that turned blight into bounty, and that you, quite frankly, have to see to believe on Lenox and 129th Street in New York City. His life was cut short by a bullet to the neck, but his legacy lives on through the generations: His children are now local Harlem heroes and treasure.

   4.5 stars
Tony Hillery, 34, started volunteering at PS 175 in Harlem in September 2010. The school was in the middle of a food desert. His father, Frederick, called the farm "the Harlem Grown." Now, the kids and their parents, with the help of farm staff, grow thousands of pounds of fruits and vegetables a year. The money is given to the kids and their families for medical expenses. Harlem Grown is the story of that first year— the ups and downs and the joy only a garden can bring, Raymond said. The book is told in conversational text that is easy to read and understand. Accompanying illustrations by some of the illustrators are vibrant and full of movement. The Harlem Grown program, launched in 1996, provides after-school tutoring and mentoring to children in the New York area. The author's share of the proceeds from the sale of this book goes directly to the charity.

Inspired by a visiting schoolyard worker, the children all pitch in, clean up the lot and through some trials and tribulations, create a bountiful urban farm. Wonderful illustrations highlight the change from dreary, vacant lot to colorful fresh fruits and vegetables. A real life picture of the authorgarden inspirer included at the end of the book.
