Book Overview

Hilda is coming to Netflix in 2018

Getting used to life in the big city is proving difficult for Hilda. The diminutive explorer is still missing the enchanted valleys and magical friends that surrounded her home in the fjords. But tonight is somehow different; tonight is the night of the mysterious Bird Parade.

Finding herself lost on the streets of Trolberg, Hilda befriends a talking raven. Together they encounter all manner of bizarre creatures from outcast Trolls to ferocious Salt Lions and deadly Rat Kings--maybe the city isn't so boring after all.

As the pair try to find their way home, it becomes clear that the amnesiac raven has an important mission to attend to . . . if only he could remember what it was.

Luke Pearson, author of the Hildafolk series and Everything We Miss has fast become one of the leading talents of the United Kingdom comics scene, garnering rave reviews from the prestigious Times and Observer newspapers and winning the Young People's Comic Award at the 2012 British Comic Awards for Hilda and the Midnight Giant.

depth of story makes for magical reading and reading again
This newest adventure by the author and illustrator Luke Pearson features Hilda in the big city, far away from the mountains she loves and her magical neighbors and friends elves, trolls, giants, and Log Man, to name a few. At least she has Twig, the antlered fox who is her best friend. Hilda and her mom moved to the big city and Hilda is keen to explore it as freely as she did her mountain home. Her mother is understandably cautious and is fearful for Hilda to go alone. The adventure begins in earnest when Hilda finds herself lost in the city with a new bird companion who has a mysterious and magical story of his own to tell. There is perhaps more magic and mystery in the city than we think! It is a wonderful book and a great read for all ages, which grows with each reading in meaning.

Quandaries and challenges that imagines children as real moral beings
My almost 5-year-old loves Hilda. We loved the introductory book but found the Midnight Giant to be a step down. Bird Parade is a return to Form and then some, it places Hilda in a challenging new situation and doesn 't shy away from presenting the real issues that come with being an outsider or having moral intuitions that are not shared by peers. With true tension, true surprise and true beauty -- can not speak highly enough of this series and this volume in particular. Can 't wait either for the next volume!

... bought this for my niece and we had a good time reading it together
She would probably appreciate it even more if her family didn 't spoil her so much.

Netflix logo on front. Not in picture. Annoyed.
Specifically ordered this one because, contrary to some others listed, it supposedly *didn 't* have the ad on the front cover, according to the photo. Arrived and it is there. You can not remove it. The photo is updated, y'all. Other than that, it would be 5 stars. The book is great, the print and paper quality is exceptional, but we are big on avoiding commercial branding for our kid. Netflix - What the Heck, . Why not make a sticker just for fun?

   Great family time story.
Book of great quality, from front to back. The amount of care that went into its design is love. I ordered the book for my children and really enjoy reading them.

   My girls love Hilda.
I love this series and so do my children. They are fun and quirky and love the world that Hilda created for them. If you like the Studio Ghibli production, this is a pretty good comic version of this fantasy world.
