This Novel is Why I Love to Read

I love to read about home. The stories in this novel are about a single family. Esi's branch is sold into slavery in the American South while Effia's branch stays free in Africa. One member of the family is told each chapter. The novel begins and ends in Africa, but there are different stories on both sides of the Atlantic. The stories in the book are personal and intimate. The American stories tell of slaves living in Jim Crow and segregation in America. The touching and beautiful prose found in Homegoing is beyond me. Every American should read this book.

The account of the African slave trade was told from the perspective of an African. The start of the trade with tribe kidnapping another tribe member, shipping by the British who brought them to markets and then history of individuals for 300 years are covered. It is well written with intelligence, interesting human experiences, history, and accuracy, and it kept my attention.

The book is very honest and dark at times. The stories of two half-sisters born in Africa who never met and were unaware of each other's existence are told. One sister is sold into slavery and the other is in comparative luxury. The sisters' paths and those of their descendants are followed by a story that explores how each generation is shaped by the one that came before.

I loved this novel, it made me feel a lot of emotions. I plan on reading her other book. A lot of the problems caused by slavery in America and in other countries are highlighted in this novel. Fire and water are themes that are used to separate the two family lines of sisters. The descendants of Esi and Effia had a different life than the others. The 2 sisters showed how much history was lost because of slavery. The stories of Esi and her descendants show how easy it was to lose years of culture and history. The stone necklace symbolized their connection to their family as a part of the story that I loved. The book was easy to read but taking notes was difficult.

CAN'T PUT IT DOWN!

You'll be hooked when I tell you from the first chapter. I don't know where or how to start, I was haunted by the characters and story for the entire day after my first few chapters, even though I didn't know where or how to start. I couldn't stop thinking of them. The author is brilliant in her ideas and the way she strings the multiple stories of this one family together. It was just genius! Everything is here, including culture, tradition, family and blood ties.

I picked up this book after listening to an interview with this author. I would encourage everyone to read this book because she has a very thoughtful way of telling stories. I had to reference the family tree a number of times to make sure I knew where the people were in the line.

Yaa Gyasi was gifted with enough life experiences, passion and desire to write this story in a different way. She dived into each new generation with ease and kept us connected to the original source of the story. African Americans and Africans living in America can learn a lot from this novel about our history as Americans. The story reminds me that we are one people. Thanks so much Yaa.
