Book Overview

Honeybee Democracy is a wonderful book, beautifully written and illustrated, about humanity's greatest friend among the insects. The honeybee is important not only for its role in agriculture but for what it has taught us concerning the fundamental nature of complex social organization. Seeley, its leading authority, here presents it to a broad readership, with scientific exactitude written in lyrical prose.--Edward O. Wilson, coauthor of The Superorganism

From bees to brains, Seeley takes us on a remarkable scientific journey of discovery. Through a landmark series of studies, he explores how honeybee swarms decide where to relocate, and from this fascinating tale of life or death, he gives us deep insights into how social systems can make good choices without global information or direct leadership. This book is a masterpiece of intense investigation, careful thought, clear writing, and love for one's subject.--John Miller, Carnegie Mellon University and the Santa Fe Institute

Seeley presents an engaging story of honeybees, hives, and scientific investigators to illustrate how choices are made through self-organization in hives, human brains, and even town meetings. Honeybee Democracy offers practical lessons told through vivid language.--Jeffrey D. Schall, E. Bronson Ingram Professor of Neuroscience, Vanderbilt Read More chevron_right

   Great book
Such a heady subject, but so well-written that the concepts are understandable, Graham said. It could have been written in a dryer, more scientific style, but instead, follows real life experiences of the author and the way that he discovered these fascinating behavior patterns of bees. We have studied bees through the ages and still are learning more.

   well done
It was complete in its coverage of finding bees and moving to new hives. I am still reading, even though there is so much information. But there are some downsides to having so much information at one's disposal.

   Surprisingly interesting read
I picked up this book with a narrow goal in mind--to learn how honeybees vote. I was pleasantly surprised by the interesting the details of the life of honeybees, and the lives of scientists who study them, Raymond said. I found the author to be a generally good and engaging writer, and he has some research to share that is important beyond the entomological world, Raymond said. I was also pleasantly surprised to learn of his connection with Edward Wilson, who also drew from experience with the eusocial insects to offer lessons to human beings, rather than how older foraging bees become scouts.

   Interesting reading
Really gets into the weeds, but what else would you expect from a doctoral thesis? This beekeeper found it informative and helpful.

Awesome Info on Honeybee Biology and Swarming!
I learned so much from this book. Dr. Seeley has us with so much information that it took years to collect, he said. His dedication to learning honeybee behavior is astounding and the data is even more impressive. This book talks about honeybee swarming what causes it, how does it occur, is it random, can it be manipulated, etc. It definitely feels like you're reading a textbook for a college class. There is just too much data, data collecting, charting, etc. But I couldn't put it down. Definitely recommend this book.

   Discusting man
I started to enjoy the detailed information regarding honey bee behavior as I have mny hives and enjoy anything that allows me to be a better host for the bees, they are magnificent creatures. I was horrified when he started talking about cyanide and how he kills wild colonies. I will never read another paper from this man again. You call yourself a bee lover.

Great read for a beekeeper and non-beekeepers
This book provides data-driven insights on honeybee decision making. If you didn't have an appreciation for honeybees prior to this book, then you definitely will after reading it. They are quite remarkable insects and we can learn a lot from their behaviour, he said.

   Best Bee Book Ever
I've read this book and anything by Tom Seeley. I learn more from reading about his research and experiences keeping bees for 40 years than from anyone else. I want to understand bees and in doing so it helps me be a better partner with my bees, Bruno said. The book will help you do just that.

   Honey bee facts and politics
I purchased this book for the facts about honeybees. It will give you that. It provides you with some thought about how your society would be different if human nature was different. We're not wild butterflies, but maybe we're more like bumblebees. This was not as good a read as his book The Lives of Bees, in which Seeley knocked it out of the park. This is well written, and is combined with plenty of thoughts on the lives of bees. Clearly this is written from the perspective of someone who has spent a lifetime with honeybees.
