Book Overview

How to Read a Poem is an unprecedented exploration of poetry and feeling. In language at once acute and emotional, distinguished poet and critic Edward Hirsch describes why poetry matters and how we can open up our imaginations so that its message can make a difference. In a marvelous reading of verse from around the world, including work by Pablo Neruda, Elizabeth Bishop, Wallace Stevens, and Sylvia Plath, among many others, Hirsch discovers the true meaning of their words and ideas and brings their sublime message home into our hearts. A masterful work by a master poet, this brilliant summation of poetry and human nature will speak to all readers who long to place poetry in their lives.

   Excellent Study of Poetry Reading
Edward Hirsch's prose reads like poetry and no wonder, as he is himself an accomplished poet. I ordered this book after reading Pearl London's interview with Hirsch in her poetry class, which was re-remembered in her POETRY IN PERSON. My intention was and continues to be a guide in developing my own voice and form through the study of his scholarly analyses of a wide range of poets, stretching my mind to embrace poets I never knew about from Alice Walker to Anna Ahkmatova, sending me to search library shelves and the Internet to find them. Moreover, he has given me courage to practice new techniques accidentally. It always seemed to him that he returns to my own favorite muse, Elizabeth Bishop. In short, Hirsch is more often open on my desk than it stands on a book shelf.

   Useful for neophytes, too.
While Edward Hirsh's book has scholarly depth, it is quite readable for those with a small background in poetry and a desire to learn. The poet's love for poetry and the vocation of the poet penetrates this book. It is a book to grow up with and return to.

   Verbiage is Garbiage
Many years ago, my English 1 professor said, that too many words can ruin a piece of writing, because his words are so true for this book, the author spends too much time on preliminaries, I could not wait for him to get to the point.

   Not acceptable . . .
Water damage on the last few pages is inevitable. I complained about the book Ugly. The distributor did not charge me.

   I read the first chapter
It was all I could do to get through it. The writing is pompous and pretentious. Had I been able to stomach the writing, I still didn't see a hint that further reading would help me see what the book title suggests is its basic purpose.

   Turgid
Get your rubber boots out. You'll need 'em to wade through this mud. This book will help you avoid snazzy poetry forms from nursery rhymes to sonnets.

poor copy of a wonderful book
Really a fantastic and loving analysis of a wide range of poetry and poets. Unfortunately, this Kindle edition has many errors that would be fatal to its understanding, but compensated for the reader's efforts. Instead of “title ”, we see “tide,” instead of “fate ”, we see “fete ” instead of “die ”, which needs to be edited and re-released at no cost to previous buyers.

Only get this book if you need it for a class.
I bought the kindle version of this textbook for a poetry class and omg is this book awful. This book is overly pretentious and has the potential to completely turn newcomers off from poetry. Much of the language used by Hirsch is overly poetic, just for the sake of being extravagant, which can make reading the text feel chaotic, because it seems like Hirsch is in competition with the poetry he is trying to analyze.

   Perfect Primer on Poetry
This book was recommended by a school's writing instructor. It is the perfect primer for understanding and appreciating poetry. I recommend this book highly to anyone who is interested in reading and understanding poetry more fully. It will make a profound difference in how you move the verse forward.

A good treatment of the value of reading poems
Strangely, he likes some very little known works but is quite good at exploring their beauty. I found this book hard to read and most of it in just one or two days. I love the concept he uses of comparing reading a poem with finding a message in a bottle, because most poems we read are random events where a person meets the mind and the heart of a poet in some unexpected opportunity, but finds infinite delight in the discovery. Nobody can define a poem properly, but this gentleman takes you a long way towards understanding and appreciating a good poem.
