Excellent Study of Poetry Reading

Edward Hirsch's prose reads like poetry and no wonder, as he is himself an accomplished poet. I ordered this book after reading Pearl London's interview with Hirsch in her poetry class, which was re-remembered in her POETRY IN PERSON. My intention was and continues to be a guide in developing my own voice and form through the study of his scholarly analyses of a wide range of poets, stretching my mind to embrace poets I never knew about from Alice Walker to Anna Ahkmatova, sending me to search library shelves and the Internet to find them. Moreover, he has given me courage to practice new techniques accidentally. It always seemed to him that he returns to my own favorite muse, Elizabeth Bishop. In short, Hirsch is more often open on my desk than it stands on a book shelf.

While Edward Hirsh's book has scholarly depth, it is quite readable for those with a small background in poetry and a desire to learn. The poet's love for poetry and the vocation of the poet penetrates this book. It is a book to grow up with and return to.

Many years ago, my English 1 professor said, that too many words can ruin a piece of writing, because his words are so true for this book, the author spends too much time on preliminaries, I could not wait for him to get to the point.

It was all I could do to get through it. The writing is pompous and pretentious. Had I been able to stomach the writing, I still didn't see a hint that further reading would help me see what the book title suggests is its basic purpose.

Really a fantastic and loving analysis of a wide range of poetry and poets. Unfortunately, this Kindle edition has many errors that would be fatal to its understanding, but compensated for the reader's efforts. Instead of “title â€, we see “tide,†instead of “fate â€, we see “fete †instead of “die â€, which needs to be edited and re-released at no cost to previous buyers.

I bought the kindle version of this textbook for a poetry class and omg is this book awful. This book is overly pretentious and has the potential to completely turn newcomers off from poetry. Much of the language used by Hirsch is overly poetic, just for the sake of being extravagant, which can make reading the text feel chaotic, because it seems like Hirsch is in competition with the poetry he is trying to analyze.

A good treatment of the value of reading poems

Strangely, he likes some very little known works but is quite good at exploring their beauty. I found this book hard to read and most of it in just one or two days. I love the concept he uses of comparing reading a poem with finding a message in a bottle, because most poems we read are random events where a person meets the mind and the heart of a poet in some unexpected opportunity, but finds infinite delight in the discovery. Nobody can define a poem properly, but this gentleman takes you a long way towards understanding and appreciating a good poem.
