There is SO much information available on every topic and some is factual but much isn't. It isn't always easy to tell which is the topic of this book.
This is NOT an easy reading book. It's more like a textbook where you have to read a chapter and really put some thought into it but don't let that scare you away as it's well explained and very interesting. It points out the mistakes people make when deciding what to believe. There are coincidences and old wife's tales. Things that have always been thought to be true and the opinion of "experts". None of that means anything. This book helps you learn which version of a "fact" or story makes the most sense and is most likely to be true. The human mind is made to find information in random data. That's why we "see" pictures in clouds and can see a "face" when looking at the moon. It's easy to be fooled and there are many physiological reasons for it. Understanding this is the first step in not being fooled by it. If you want to become better at recognizing the nonsense in what you read and how to see what is not logical even though it may at first appear to be, this is a wonderful book. I think "how to think" should be mandatory in school and this would be a great text book. |
