Book Overview

This New York Times Bestselling picture book biography series by Brad Meltzer has an inspiring message: We can all be heroes.

Jackie Robinson always loved sports, especially baseball. But he lived at a time before the Civil Rights Movement, when the rules weren't fair to African Americans. Even though Jackie was a great athlete, he wasn't allowed on the best teams just because of the color of his skin. Jackie knew that sports were best when everyone, of every color, played together. He became the first black player in Major League Baseball, and his bravery changed African-American history and led the way to equality in all sports in America.

This engaging series is the perfect way to bring American history to life for young children, providing them with the right role models, supplemementing Common Core learning in the classroom, and best of all, inspiring them to strive and dream.

   Great book, great series
I get books for my nephew, who is turning 1 on Christmas Day. This is definitely important to read independently for an older reader, but my brother and sister-in-law read every day to him. I add all ranges of books to buy variety for them. This is a lovely book and a wonderful series in general. They are magnificently written and illustrated. When I learned something new, I read them before wrapping them as a gift. Even more, I love the tagline ordinary people change the world. Until I heard the author ranting about it on a podcast, I was unaware of this series. I am so glad that I found out about them. I will add the entire series to my nephew's library, definitely!

   I am. . .They relate!
I bought this for my students so that they could read from the time they were children about the lives of famous people. My third grade students love, love, and love the I am series. To see third graders love biographies as much as Dog-Man is the most inspiring and has us on our way to wide reading for the year!

   Great
My daughter had to write a report on jackie Robinson in the 1st grade for the black history month. This was a great resource and touches difficult issues in a way that a young child can understand. Her teacher and the other first grade teachers borrowed it to use in the class. I plan on buying a few more from the series.

All books in the great people change the world series are ordinary. Not only are children learning about historical figures, but they are humorous and beautifully illustrated.

   Best books
Ordinary people change the world series is the best : I love that Brad Meltzer's story is very captivating and the illustration by Christopher Eliopoulos is so cute. Every night we read these books. Each book teaches that they were just ordinary people who had different struggles in life, but persevere by being courageous and by not giving up.

   Good book, wrong important details
I bought this book for my son because he loves baseball and I wanted to teach him about this great baseball hero. It is a really cute book and he loves it. But I am not very happy with the fact that the date is completely wrong for his first major league game. That is kind of a huge thing when you use this book to teach children and give them the wrong information.

   Wonderful Book!
I bought this book because I loved reading about Jackie Robinson as a child, and I was not disappointed. I am really impressed with how well this book deals with the racism that Jackie faced in a way that opened the line of dialogue with my daughter. I am excited to add to our collection more books by ordinary people change the world!

Seriously could not love these books more
Albert Einstein ordered this one, Helen Keller and Helen Keller. My 7 year old has read them in one sitting and has asked for more. They opened honest communication on differences and how to celebrate them. Could not love these books more seriously. The illustrations are engaging and as well darling. I have recommended them to anyone I can.
