Book Overview

National Bestseller

Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary

To compose his stunning documentary film I Am Not Your Negro, acclaimed filmmaker Raoul Peck mined James Baldwin's published and unpublished oeuvre, selecting passages from his books, essays, letters, notes, and interviews that are every bit as incisive and pertinent now as they have ever been. Weaving these texts together, Peck brilliantly imagines the book that Baldwin never wrote. In his final years, Baldwin had envisioned a book about his three assassinated friends, Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King. His deeply personal notes for the project have never been published before. Peck's film uses them to jump through time, juxtaposing Baldwin's private words with his public statements, in a blazing examination of the tragic history of race in America.

This edition contains more than 40 black-and-white images from the film.

   I Loved The Read
A great insight into the life of James Baldwin and his writing.

   Bad read.
Thought is a complete story, but instead a lot of uncohesive notes Baldwin wrote at different times of his life. The investment was not worth it. Great title, which has peaked my interest.

I never knew until I listened...
The real violence is the internal distortion that we have taught through long lost cultural norms to us. I now have a better idea, although I can never know exactly. The documentary is really eye-opening and this book lets you drink from the words and clarify their meanings. We, the human beings, need to examine what we take for granted. We have all been built by delusions long ago to justify exploitation and death. If the sins of a generation are indeed sevenfold, then we must soon heal this sin.

Seller needs to respect the author more
This is NOT a review of the book. I admire and respect James Baldwin so much, which makes this item even more bizarre to purchase from this seller! The book feels like someone just trimmed it with a home printer and printing the edges carelessly with a Scissor. It's all ragged! And the formatting appears to be like someone downloaded an internet copy without properly formatting it into a book.

   Loved it!!!
Educational eye opener very well written. If you are a human being, this is a must read. such a tragedy to not have more of Mr Baldwin's writings.

   I now know Mr. Baldwin!
This is an example of an African American man using his unrivaled intelligence to Fight for all people of the African Right not only to exist in the USA, but also to thrive as equals to any other race of people! I was moved to purchase and read this book because the film was only shown on one screen for two weeks at 8 pm and 11 pm in the most culturally diverse city in the United States. I downloaded the book on my Kindle and read it in two nights. In spite of the risk involved in his life, James Baldwin is presented by Mr. Uncommon Bravery. His memory will live on in the hearts and minds of modern freedom fighters throughout the world through this extremely well-written book! The Black Lives Matter movement is a cry for help in my opinion and not dissimilar to Mr. Balwin's poignant message from the grave!

Pretty much the documentary in book form
Though I bought this book first, I watched the movie before reading the book. It would honestly not have any bearing because the book is literally the movie in book form, following the script to the letter. In this way, I feel like the movie is more important, but the content is still what is effective. If you have already seen the film, this book is not per se necessary, but it is still worth looking at.

Was a very black-eyed look at the world from an intuitive perspective. Made me set and think about my own interactions with the black community.

Mr Baldwin was such a wonderful writer. I will see the movie later this month, and I am so glad that I was able to read the accompanying book before seeing the documentary.
