Perfect Mexican daughters do not go away to college. They do not move out of their parents' house after high school graduation. Perfect Mexican daughters never abandon their family. But Julia is not your perfect Mexican daughter. That was her sister Olga's role. Then a tragic accident leaves Olga dead and Julia reassembling the shattered pieces of her family. And no one seems to acknowledge that Julia is broken, too. Instead, her mother channels her grief into pointing out every possible way Julia has failed. But it's not long before Julia suspects that Olga might not have been as perfect as everyone thought. With the help of her best friend, Lorena, and her first love (first everything), Connor, Julia is determined to uncover the truth. Was Olga really what she seemed? And how can Julia even attempt to live up to a seemingly impossible ideal?Random Minis are super-light, cellphone-sized, unabridged books made to fit into a pocket or one hand without sacrificing readability. This is NOT a good book for kids to read
Derived From Web , Oct 12, 2021
If your daughter is told to read this book, be careful. It's not a good book. The teacher should be pushed back on the suggestion. I wish I had read it before giving it to my daughter.

Heartbreaking and Humorous YA Read

I would have liked this book as a teenager, it's discussions of anxiety, depression, and trauma. It reminded me of how unprepared I was when I was a teen. If I was younger, I would have gotten more out of this read. If read by the intended audience, it would be 5 stars.

a tired compendium of cliches

There's nothing in this character that isn't a cliché of the moment, and that's the main issue. Ethnicity doesn't profundity.

Intense Read
Derived From Web , Mar 25, 2018
I cried while reading this book. The multiple plot lines are engaging and the characters are fully formed. I think this book would be good for an older teen or adult reader, as I think certain aspects of the story might be too intense for a younger reader.

If you are a FirstGen millennial woman, this book will really speak to your heart
Derived From Web , Jan 15, 2018
The book was a pleasure to read. I had to confront many of the same issues when I was a kid in Mcallen, Texas. The book describes a lot of my problems. I've never read a book about the challenges of low income women trying to escape from traditional ideals and poverty. This book will speak to your heart if you grew up in an immigrant family and then attended college. Highly recommended. It is a treat to read.
