Book Overview

One of Us is Lying meets Pretty Little Liars for middle-grade readers.

The email arrives Sunday night: Do exactly what I say, when I say it, or I will reveal your secret.

On Monday morning, seventh graders Owen, Gemma, Ally, and Todd, who have nothing in common and barely know each other, must work together and follow the instructions of an anonymous blackmailer. None of them want to go along with the blackmailer's instructions, but each of them have a secret they must protect at all costs.

Set during a single day of school, the students race against the clock to complete a disquieting set of tasks, with fast-paced chapters detailing each moment of the day interspersed with a later interview-style recording made by the quartet.

I Know Your Secret is an exploration of why we conceal the truth, how far we'll go to keep it hidden, and the power of being honest.

   A Must-Read Middle-Grade Thriller!!
Imagine what a middle schooler would do if he or she were suddenly assigned a new class. We're not saying it, but we're keeping it a secret. The writer of the anonymous email lands in your inbox on Sunday evening and I know your secret. Skipping even one step, I will tell everyone that I am ready for tomorrow. It's a case of mistaken identity that brings together the three best friends: Owen (Jeremy Jordan), Gemma (Jennifer Lawrence) and Todd (Will Smith). The four students knew each other, but were not friends, the report said. And now they have something huge in common, too. Each has a personal secret they'd like to keep, well, secret. The four work feverishly together to carry out the blackmailer's instructions. The other two are to try and figure out the blackmailer's identity. The book is a fast-paced, beautifully plotted parable in the "Ten Commandments" series. The book's secrets are so well-known, they're called "The Blair Witch's Army." Yay! Added bonus: There will be a sequel. The verdict was highly recommended.
Sometimes you'll do whatever it takes to protect your secret!
What a middle school kid, he said. But when you have secrets as serious as some of these students, you'll do anything to protect them, Graham said. Including following their instructions no matter how much you despise them! Even if the identity of the blackmailer isn't revealed, knowing that the person behind the mask is among them makes it that much more important to find out the real deal. Four strangers came together and became friends, Crosby said.
   An Enjoyable Read
The girl received a text from her mother: "I know your secret." To keep those secrets under wraps, they must work together to appease the blackmailer. Even if it means they do some pretty questionable things over the course of the day, Mr. Rule told the judge. While I read a lot of YA, I don't tend to read middle school, so this was a different read for me. It was a nice change of pace, he said. I liked how each of the secrets was unique to the person and felt dire to them in the way things can be in middle school. The story unfolded in a fun way, with each task getting more questionable, Morgenthau said. The two kids had never met before, but the shared tasks brought them together. Overall, I enjoyed the book, even if I didn't get to the point where I wanted to kill time.
