Book Overview

G.K. Chesterton was a master essayist. But reading his essays is not just an exercise in studying a literary form at its finest, it is an encounter with timeless truths that jump off the page as fresh and powerful as the day they were written. The only problem with Chesterton's essays is that there are too many of them. Over five thousand For most GKC readers it is not even possible to know where to start or how to begin to approach them.So three of the world's leading authorities on Chesterton - Dale Ahlquist, Joseph Pearce, Aidan Mackey - have joined together to select the best Chesterton essays, a collection that will be appreciated by both the newcomer and the seasoned student of this great 20th century man of letters. The variety of topics are astounding: barbarians, architects, mystics, ghosts, fireworks, rain, juries, gargoyles and much more. Plus a look at Shakespeare, Dickens, Jane Austen, George MacDonald, T.S. Eliot, and the Bible. All in that inimitable, formidable but always quotable style of GKC. Even more astounding than the variety is the continuity of Chesterton's thought that ties everything together. A veritable feast for the mind and heart. While some of the essays in this volume may be familiar, many of them are collected here for the first time, making their first appearance in over a century.

   Different
This is for a book club. Though written in a different time, there are several elements of his essays that apply today. However, a good deal of chaff to sort through to get to some of the morsels.

   Always valuable
Chesterton said that reading Borges was one of his unfailing pleasures. Chesterton is a master in the art of prompting the reader to confront his everyday opinions. Nevertheless, he offers a new window to many usual notions. As an example, I enjoyed his arguments in the essay on certain modern writers and the institution of the family.

Terrific, thought-provoking essays by a man who I wish I could hold a candle when it comes to the intellect. This is a best-of compliance, so if you already have many of his books, you will probably find essays you have already read. I have not yet read the others I purchased, but will soon do so and am very much looking forward to what he has to say. He does write from a Catholic perspective, so that if you are an atheist or agnostic, it is exceedingly likely that you will disagree with what he has to say about various issues, so you have been warned. At the very least, I believe he will cause you to think, even if you ultimately disagree with him. I wish I would have discovered Chesterton earlier, but as they say, better late than never. This is a read by this one. I don 't think that you will regret it.

   Contrarian traditionalism
It sometimes feels as though the project of Chesterton's life was to take all the tradition and folk wisdom he encountered and strengthen a robust intellectual defense of each solitary element, or at least draw attention to the contradictions of the modernists who proposed to dispense with their cultural inheritance. Either way, his brilliance and clarity of thought provide a stark and illuminating contrast to those who have been shaped unknowingly by an unmoored and atomized cosmopolitan consensus.

   My introduction to Chesterton.
He makes a lot of pop-culture references that are lost to me because of the time-jump. But GK's perceptions are pleasant and his remarks are sharp. Today, the substance of his essays still stands true. A very smart, coy coy friend.
