Surprise The little red chicken is back -- and as endearingly silly as ever -- in David Ezra Stein's follow-up to the Caldecott Honor-winning Interrupting Chicken.

It's homework time for the little red chicken, who has just learned about something every good story should have: an elephant of surprise. Or could it be an element of surprise (as her amused papa explains)? As they dive in to story after story, looking for the part that makes a reader say Whoa I didn't know that was going to happen, Papa is sure he can convince Chicken he's right. After all, there are definitely no elephants in The Ugly Duckling, Rapunzel, or The Little Mermaid -- or are there? Elephant or element, something unexpected awaits Papa in every story, but a surprise may be in store for the little red chicken as well. Full of the same boisterous charm that made Interrupting Chicken so beloved by readers, this gleeful follow-up is sure to delight fans of stories, surprises, and elephants alike.

I read this story to my 16-year-old and young daughter and they cracked. I practice storytimes and do on them. This book is perfect for children who are already familiar with fairy tales. Although it could help them to introduce them too. I would use this for children who are in primary school, because while preschoolers might enjoy the enthusiasm, it will be appreciated by a slightly older audience.
Great sequel to the first book
My daughters love the first book so when I saw this book I had to get it. It is a funny book and I like how they simply explain what is an element of surprise so that children who are a little younger understand why this book is cute.
   Love this book!!!
Papa and Chicken are hilarious. It has a similar tone and father-child relationship, although the mother is most often asked to read these books.
   Bane of my existence
After reading the book first, Daughters favorite book to read. Everyday yelling for months... and now a new game of randomly reading SURPRISE I 'M AN ELEPHANT!
Hard for Young Children to Understand
I imagine that it would be a fun story for 10 year olds.
   Great Book
I tried to write a decent review on this, but I kept being interrupted by a chicken! Just kidding, this book was great, my nieces loved it and read it to me all the time.
This is a great story in the tradition of the interrupting chicken
This is a good story in the tradition of the interloping chicken. As an adult, I enjoy the humor of the elephant of surprise.
   Decent read aloud
Though I have asked the author personally for a sequel to the Interrupting Chicken, I am disappointed to finally receive the 2nd book. It is derivative. Maybe that's why he asked his eyes when he rolled them.
The elephant of surprise makes for a funny, great story!
I was surprised by this sequel, which is quite fitting based on its theme. I really enjoyed the first interrupting chicken book and didn 't realize that a sequel had come out. Then I thought it was funny because it is about the element of surprise.
