Book Overview

Celebrate one of the earliest science fiction novels by rediscovering Jack Finney's internationally acclaimed Invasion of the Body Snatchers--which Stephen King calls a story to be read and savored for its own satisfactions, now repackaged with a foreword by #1 New York Times bestselling author, Dean Koontz.

On a quiet fall evening in the peaceful town of Mill Valley, California, Dr. Miles Bennell discovers an insidious, horrifying plot. Subtly, almost imperceptibly, alien life-forms are taking over the bodies and minds of his neighbors, friends, family, the woman he loves, and the entire world as he knows it.

First published in 1955, this classic science fiction thriller about the ultimate alien invasion and the triumph of the human spirit over an invisible enemy has inspired multiple film adaptations and entertained readers for decades. This repackaged edition features a new cover by Hugo award-winning illustrator, John Picacio and a foreword by New York Times bestselling author, Dean Koontz.

Fun to read, well-written, no gore, and maybe even thought-provoking….
Jack Finney is the author of Time and Again. The story line is well developed and has the right amount of tension. No gore! Even though it is a science fiction book, it carries an inkling of plausibility. The premise of this classic is that there are other life forms in our universe and that they are driven from their worlds to ours. The suggestion is that aliens have visited here in the past and made us who we are, if you watch enough of the current TV fare. Do we really know who our neighbors are? What are our friends? Our leaders, right? How about us? Before you watch the movie, read the book and take a close look at all the candidates for public office, beware of any large Pods you come across, and read this reader's advice.
You think zombies are bad--you ain't read Body Snatchers
The Birds, Inherit the Wind, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner were some of the formative movies for me as a child. I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know I OTBS was a novel, but I was thrilled to read it after Amazon recommended the anniversary edition. It was a good lesson on how to translate written works to film. The style and mood of the book were captured by Mr. Wanger and Siegel. The novelist, Jack Finney, and the writer, Mr. Waring, seem to have the same goal. I didn't sleep well after starting the book and woke up in the middle of the night to finish it, but it's a terrific book. It's very haunting. I could picture myself in that situation.
Instantly obvious why it’s a classic
I knew I would like this book even though I only read a few pages. I have never seen all of the movie versions, but I know the basic story. This book is enjoyable to read. It has a dry humor, a quick pace and some really eerie bits that make it compelling. I bet you will love the tale if you got as far into your research as I did.
Classic that I wish I had read a long time ago
What can I say about this? I am sad that it took me so long to read it. I loved reading this book. I can understand why it is considered a classic. It is a type of alien invasion that I have never heard of before. I have seen spoof of it in cartoons and movies. But nothing quite like it since. There is a debate about zombies. The books in the Flowers series may be similar. I have not had time to read them yet. The characters are pretty basic. They are thrown into the fire quickly and it doesn't take much to see yourself in that situation. I can easily recommend it to anyone who is interested in sci- fi. It would have been an easy 55, but it has DRM so 45.
