Book Overview

Written to be read aloud by two voices -- sometimes alternating, sometimes simultaneous -- here is a collection of irresistible poems that celebrate the insect world, from the short life of the mayfly to the love song of the book louse. Funny, sad, loud, and quiet, each of these poems resounds with a booming, boisterous, joyful noise.

In this remarkable volume of poetry for two voices, a companion to I Am Phoenix, Paul Fleischman verbally re-creates the Booming/boisterios/joyful noise of insects. The poems resound with the pulse of the cicada and the drone of the honeybee. Eric Beddows's vibrant drawings send each insect soaring, spinning, or creeping off the page in its own unique way.

Paul Fleischman has created not only a clear and fascinating guide to the insect world -- from chrysalid butterflies to whirligig beetles -- but an exultant celebration of life.

A great tool to encourage children to read poetry
My wife was teaching fourth graders when she came upon this book. They all took to reading the poems as they enjoyed being able to read with a friend. It has been put up in my wife's office so that people can see it when they visit her. Many people take this. Her copy has a soft cover and is a little worn, but it still lays flat. I was happy to find the book in hardcover so it could look more inviting with age.

   Duet Voice Book
The work is good. If read with one voice, there could be some confusion. This book is a duet. Excellent for Reader Theatre. Once kids are introduced to the duet voices, they will love it.

   Fun for all ages
This is a book that I love. When my kids were young, we would read it together. It was educational and fun. Gave it away when the children were grown and regretted it when my oldest became a mom.

   Bugs are awesome
I wouldn't have thought of writing poetry about bugs, but Flieschmann thought about bug poetry and wrote it, and the insights he had are wonderful. The poem about cicadas was my favorite one. I would like to hear the poems read.

   Fun for the Whole Family
We love poetry and we are a family of home schoolers. We do poetry tea time once a week and this book has been a great addition. It's fun to be able to make the poems interactive. A keeper is definitely who I am.

... poem in a turn-taking fashion with a child brings great joy for adult and child
Reading a poem with a child brings joy to both of them. The interplay of the two voices in different forms goes beyond simple poetry reading. This is a celebration of language and nature.
