In an exuberant picture book, a glimpse of costumed mermaids leaves one boy flooded with wonder and ready to dazzle the world.
While riding the subway home from the pool with his abuela one day, Julin notices three women spectacularly dressed up. Their hair billows in brilliant hues, their dresses end in fishtails, and their joy fills the train car. When Julin gets home, daydreaming of the magic he's seen, all he can think about is dressing up just like the ladies in his own fabulous mermaid costume: a butter-yellow curtain for his tail, the fronds of a potted fern for his headdress. But what will Abuela think about the mess he makes -- and even more importantly, what will she think about how Julin sees himself? Mesmerizing and full of heart, Jessica Love's author-illustrator debut is a jubilant picture of self-love and a radiant celebration of individuality. It takes about 5 Hours and 36 minutes on average for a reader to read JuliáN Is A Mermaid. My son loves this book. My son also loves this book. It is delicate, with beautiful artwork and a sweet story about a boy who wants to be a mermaid and his grandma helps him. I read it to my son 3 times tonight, and I read it to my son.

This is my favorite book of the son. There are not many words so that it allows him to really use his imagination and take the beautiful illustrations. I love that it teaches children to always be true to themselves.

Great For Your Picture Book Library!

The magic of the imagination and the dress up are magical. I was so excited to add this book to our library, and I was so excited to add it to our library. Relatable to all children and more importantly, gives many reflections and mirrors to show that there are many ways to be a boy.

Beware of ideological propaganda in this book
Derived From Web , Jan 15, 2019
What was the goal of this book? Are you fostering acceptance or trying to convince transgender boys to become little more? All children are reading this book at the tender age, and at the tender age it is intended to be accepted. Pictures of a little boy putting on lipstick and a dress and walking away to a MerMAID parade in Coney Island along with adult men dressed in the same way are not OK. This book does not teach acceptance ; it confuses the kids. The book was read to my child in a private PreK classroom in NYC. Parents take notes to check what their children are taught at school.

Well written and Beautiful

I love this book ''. I only wish it had been available years ago, when my son was in full dress as Elsa Mode. There is so much emphasis on hyper femininity with isles of pink and masculinity, it is so nice to see a realistic portrayion of people. Boys can and do things like beautiful things. I definitely recommend this book, especially to families with children who don 't fit a rigid gender expectation, especially to families with children who don 't fit a rigid expectation of gender. As an artist myself, I love the illustrations just as ''. They are beautiful .

There is a moment of uncertainty when Julian has been thoroughly swept into his vision of himself as a Mermaid and then his abuela seems disapproving, but then we realize it is not Julian's vision but his abuela's realization that she can improve his vision by adding a beautiful element ito his costume before leading him to join the Mermaid.
