Book Overview

Ken Jennings's Trivia Almanac is the ingeniously organized book where, for a change, the all-time Jeopardy champ gets to ask the questions-and where every day of the year will give you the chance to test your trivia mettle.

For example-February 21: In 1912, on this day, Teddy Roosevelt coined the political phrase hat in the ring, so Ken Jennings fires off a series of ring questions. What two NFL quarterbacks have four Super Bowl rings each?* What rings are divided by the Cassini Division?** Also on this date, in 1981, the goth music scene was born in London, so here's a quiz on black-clad icons like Darth Vader, Johnny Cash, and Zorro. Do you know the secret identities of Ivanhoe's Black Knight*** or Men in Black's Agent M****?

In this ultimate book for trivia buffs and other assorted know-it-alls, the 365 entries feature This Day in History factoids, trivia quizzes, and questions categorized by Jennings as Easy, Hard, and Yeah, Good Luck. Topics cover every subject under the sun, from paleontology to mixology, sports feats to Bach suites, medieval popes to daytime soaps. This addictive gathering of facts, oddities, devilishly clever quizzes, and other flights of fancy will make each day a fun and intriguing new challenge.

Large Quantity of Absurdly Obscure Questions
I must say that I am not a huge fan of this book. There are some good questions in it... but a huge percentage of questions seem absurdly obscure. Furthermore, the print is very small and the answers are not easy to find.

   Not suitable for Kindle format
This book is organized in two sections, one for questions and a second section for answers. The Kindle format requires the reader to read all 7,777 questions before seeing any responses. I would love this book in the traditional format, but find it in the Kindle format unfriendly.

   Didn't work for me...
This did not feel to me like a trivia book. A lot of the questions seemed to be dated or uninteresting. For example, when I asked my college class what was Balki's home island on TV's Perfect Strangers? They stared at me blankly. I'm in my mid-50s and I remember this television show barely myself. What is the better-known nickname of the Halloween Nor'easter from 1991? Again, maybe a good question about Jeopardy, but as a piece of trivia, not all that interesting or exciting. The better question is who the hell is Danny Elfman? While full of information, I found this book for my purposes not useful at all.

A Blast at Parties (no, seriously!)
Not only is it bound and typset very well, it has also some great trivia. I was given this for my birthday and my family and I couldn 't help but sit around the living room, while one of us asked questions and we all tried to answer them. It was a big fun and we all learned a lot. I would recommend it completely.

Please write a second book, Ken!
Every week we spend 30 minutes on Zoom with me reading the events of a specific day, asking the corresponding trivia and keeping the score of the first to answer correctly. This is a great book and I wish he could publish a second. No other trivia book I have seen comes anywhere close to the breadth of the themes and entertainment value.

   Total waste of money
Kindle bought the edition of The Kindle. I can 't figure out how to return for my money, because this was without a doubt a waste of money. You get many pages of questions answered and you can click on a link for the answers. You had better remember all the questions, because there is no place to click back to where you were. Don t waste your money.

   Great book, very difficult trivia
I am a huge trivia buff and love Ken Jennings so was excited to receive this book. I love the daily format and the tidbits that are applicable to the day. Three downsides : I like to read trivia on long road trips with my family and some questions, such as the matching questions, don 't translate well if you don 't have the book directly in front of you. Second downside : I consider myself a pretty decent trivia buff, but some of these are so obscure that it is very hard to find. I wouldn 't say it is an issue because I learned a lot, but the difficulty level is probably very hard and would have liked that. Lastly, having the answers at the end of the month make checking the answers a bit awkward without a series of sticky notes to cover answers, etc.

   A vanity project, nothing more
I am a fresh person and I am always looking for serious material. I was seriously pleased when I started ploughing through this massive book first, but the material deteriorated as each day passed. I would estimate that 95% of this tome comprises entertainment-related material films, pop music, TV stuff. The rest of the world's general knowledge history, geography, religion, science, literature, medicine, politics, etc takes the remaining 5%. I get the feeling that Mr Jennings had a great idea for a good trivia book, but when he got into it, he realized it was just too much work. He took the easy way out by filling the pages with entertainment industry obscurity. If I could, I would give it half a star.
