Book Overview

The bestselling, widely heralded, Jungian introduction to the psychological foundation of a mature, authentic, and revitalized masculinity.

Redefining age-old concepts of masculinity, Jungian analysts Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette make the argument that mature masculinity is not abusive or domineering, but generative, creative, and empowering of the self and others. Moore and Gillette clearly define the four mature male archetypes that stand out through myth and literature across history: the king (the energy of just and creative ordering), the warrior (the energy of aggressive but nonviolent action), the magician (the energy of initiation and transformation), and the lover (the energy that connects one to others and the world), as well as the four immature patterns that interfere with masculine potential (divine child, oedipal child, trickster and hero). King, Warrior, Magician, Lover is an exploratory journey that will help men and women reimagine and deepen their understanding of the masculine psyche.

   Highly Recommended for Both Genders!
The book was placed on a required reading list on Breaking BUDS on Reading & Writing. No fool! No fool! Buds not buds as in dope........ duh, not buds as in Buds. SEALS - Basis underwater demolitionSEALS. But I digress for the sake of Levity. Warrior is a fascinating book dealing with the male psyche and how we mature from boys to men. As men, we develop with a primary archetype, but eventually include all four archetypes. The authors also detail what I call the contra or disordered archetype. Most men will see themselves defined as boys or adolescents and then as men easily. I also could pick out my personality, I highly recommend the book to women who have been in a heterosexual relationship or are currently in a personal relationship. If you think that women are difficult to understand............ well, the female gender does not have an exclusive on this. Plus really, the goal of every human on the planet should be to get along with others and understand that you have to understand yourself. Identifying the real issue is halfway to solving it.

The male archetypes and their Shadow components.
The book was recommended to me by a good friend who is a retired captain, USMC, USNA graduate and published author. He knew I would enjoy it, knowing about my Jungian processing style. He also knew that I would enjoy it. This work is well written, in its analysis of the four Jungian archetypes, highly male. Years ago I read Patrick Arnold's Wildmen, Warriors and Kings, the work that revealed my warrior archetype to me. Lover is contemporary and even 25 years after it was written, 25 years after it is applied, Warrior, Magician, King, Warrior, Warrior, Magician, Lover is contemporary and is applicable today. Jung's introduction of the shadow side of each archetype lifts Moore's focus on the duality of types. I would have given this work 5 stars, but 4 is the best I can do for it. I encourage anyone interested in learning about the in-depth analysis of these four archetypes to give it a careful read. Even 25 years after it was written, it has wide application.

Very good book to understand some categorizations of a this man
This book is very good to understand some categorizations of a this man. I don 't think we fit into any one, but we can see all of them in us. There is also more to us, yet this is a great book to start the exploration.

   a must-read
This is an excellent primer that exposes a trend that has now existed for some time in the Western World. When songs like Where have all the cowboys gone? For the answer, read this book on the air, you should read this book for the air. To be a man is not to be aggressive and war-like. Rather, it's to be giving and feeling. Brothers, read on, brothers.

   Interesting book overall
The books I'; s interesting overall. I was personally looking for more practical advices on how to embody different archetypes. But for someone who likes intellectual discussions more, an interesting read should be an intellectual one.

Well-meaning but simplistic binary thinking about gender
I bought this book as a required reading for a course on male spirituality. I applaud the authors'project of re-envisioning healthy masculinity for a modern world where mature myth-making is often lacking. Their exclusive focus on heterosexual manhood and rigid gender binaries was however dated in 1990, when the book came out, and is even more short-sighted today. I am fed up of pop psychology books about universal relationship dynamics that continue to imply that everyone in a motherdad household with mom as the primary caregiver and grows up to position the opposite sex, I felt misogynist to position the mother as an engulfing or infantilizing force that the emerging male ego must symbolically slay. And I say this as a transsexual person with just this kind of mother! If you must read this book, balance it with Adrienne Rich's of Woman Born for a critique of how men are socialized to identify with their mothers as the price of adulthood.

I wish I found this book sooner...
I broke off with my girlfriend of three years recently. Having learned that the reason for the separation was mostly my own fault, I began to seek answers and turn over a new leaf. This book helped me align my psyche as a man and push me in the right direction. My Shadow Warriors will have no longer control over my life. King, Warrior, Magician, Lover is a must read for your modern man's day.

Very clear writing, very clear. A combination of archetypical with very isoteric ideas that easily resonate with any body. It acts as a kind of catalyst for the retrospection in your own life, giving you a new lens to see the reality of what it means to not only be a mature man, but also a complete human being. Here are the lessons I say are universal and when I read it actually echoes where today's society amplifies, neglects and exacerbates these issues that go unspoken. This book is originally from the 1990s when this spiritual movement began, but as I read this in 2018, I think that we are in desperate need to heed the lessons of the past to properly lead yourself in the future, as Jordan Peterson once said.
