Book Overview

The most enjoyable way to learn about an unfamiliar culture is through its stories--especially when they're told in two languages

Korean Stories for Language Learners introduces 42 traditional Korean folktales with bilingual Korean and English versions, presented on facing pages, together with detailed notes and exercises aimed at beginning learners of the language. The book can be used as a reader in first- and second-year Korean language courses or by anyone who wishes to learn about Korean folktales and traditional Korean culture.

This elegantly illustrated volume is designed to help language learners expand their vocabulary and to develop a basic familiarity with Korean culture. The stories gradually increase in length and complexity throughout the book as the reader improves their vocabulary and understanding of the language. After the first few stories, the reader is asked to use the vocabulary in speaking and writing exercises. By reading these classic stories, they also are given a window into Korean culture and learn to appreciate the uniqueness of the country--which provides greater motivation to continue learning the difficult language.

Cultural notes and discussion questions further reinforce one's understanding of the stories, and bolster one's language skills. Korean-English and English-Korean glossaries are included as well as an Read More chevron_right

   It's okay
It's just that the folk stories are okay. The recordings get really long and repetitive. Like in many of the stories, the main characters do the same exact actions, but with different consequences. Like trading a mouse for a cat. For now, the exchange is only interested in cats and dogs. For a horse, he said, "it's all about the money." Only halfway through the book did I realize that I couldn't read it. If you're looking to improve your reading, this is not for you. It's too boring and the stories are so old that a lot of Korean people don't even associate with most of the fairy tales. It would be great to have a book with short, interesting Korean news articles about current events in English too.

Good book for learning, but various typos make for frustrating moments
I'm really liking this book, and it's helping me with my learning, too. But it's incredibly annoying to find a bunch of typos and mis-tranalations that make for very frustrating moments where I think my comprehension is off, it turns out it's just a mistake in the book. Even if we get to the point where we can, these are the kind of details that really need to be worked out in any future editions.

   Not for beginners
I would not get into this book until I was proficient in writing and reading Korean hangul. See the rest of the story at: http://www. theguardian. com/news/cities/london-may... The product comes with an audio disk.

   An absolute Love
I had no idea it was almost like a curriculum. The vocab and the comprehension questions are great. Seller was very professional and arrived in great condition, Mr. Dhaliwal said.

   Great book!
She also told us that she's a big fan of the stories in both English and hongul. My 8 year old became interested after hearing her read some of the stories to us and started to read it. This was well worth the investment. Adults learning Korean and children alike would enjoy the book, Roong said.

A fun book to expand your Korean Knowledge!
I have been reading this column daily. The stories start with easy stories, get harder and harder, Raymond said. It uses vocabulary that you've learned plus new words as you go along. It's not something to use alone. Before you can speak of Hangul, you must have a basic understanding of the language. If you're looking for a more affordable way to learn Korean, I would recommend Billy Go's workbook and lesson plans. I've been using all 3 together and I've learned so much in the last 2 months, Sosa said.

   Good for Beginner to Intermediate..
As far as I can tell, being late beginner, early intermediate, is probably the case. Although one that makes sense if you're typing fast, in the vocab list for the story of the girl and boy that became the sun and moon, the word mun in korean is said to mean door. It makes sense, for example, if you're typing fast because they sound alike. I'm not ashamed to say that I really enjoy the book. As I read a new story, I highlight the words I don't know and then I look them up in a dictionary.

   Great for a learner!
I have read the entire book, and I absolutely love it. It's great to be back home, said Dr. Brian Stokes, director of NASA's Ames Research Center in California. There are also two Korean-American authors of the "Harold and Maude" series. Each story has a pre-reading question, vocabulary, post-reading questions, and a writing prompt. Some of the stories included relevant cultural information which I found helpful. I'm not a Polyglot, but this book is great. At a certain point the question may not have English translations so you have to try to figure out what's being asked. Overall, I really enjoyed the book, said Lee Eisenberg, assistant professor of marketing at George Washington University. As a beginner Korean learner, I can't vouch for the quality of Korean in the book, but I love the set up of this book a lot.

Excellent integration of Korean and English versions of stories with supporting notes and vocabulary
A good collection of Korean stories with English translation and vocabulary. The training wheels make it relatively straightforward to move through the stories, he said. It's useful to be able to see the language used in story format, in contrast with some text materials that give you smaller pieces to work with, he said. The stories can be also amusing, and the book incorporates cultural notes that help put things in context.
