A great series! I bought books 1-4, for an 8-year old... she absolutely loves them. Regardless, she enjoys reading. Because she is required to read for school every night 30-minutes, however, the chapter books come in very handy. More often than not, she reads beyond her 30-minutes because she wants to finish a certain chapter, and on a few occasions she has completed the entire book before going to bed. The stories are great, fun, interesting, and the illustrations are okay. She looks forward to following the different characters through the main series. Highly recommended the books and will probably purchase additional series. Surprise Island :

The Cast Grows and the Surprises Increase!
Derived From Web , May 27, 2022
I've loved this series for many years so that I introduce it to my sons. But although they enjoyed this book, they did not like it quite as much as the first. Still, I suspect that they'll grow more like it as we continue through the series and may want to come back to it in the future. Already lots of surprises and many more to come in this fabulous series!

Box Car kids are still relevant today! My kids love them.
Derived From Web , May 27, 2022
Growing up in the same town as Ms. Chandler, I was lucky enough to go to the library to read her stories. Their love for them was perfect. I was not sure if my children would love them as much as I did 30 years later. I think that we read the Boxcar #1 at least 6 times. The kids just love the idea of building a home without adults and taking care of themselves. Who doesn 't love the pink cracked cup and the streaming stream cooler? I was not sure if Surprise Island would have the same magic. It actually did! Thank goodness! Not only did it have a lot of the same elements as the first, my boys loved finding native relics and the mystery of who Joe was and of course why can not they go into the yellow house? It is so refreshing that a book written so many years ago can be today relevant, that you don 't need a little humor, TV feature references or violence to engage children's imaginations.

second generation

I discovered these and read them to my children in the 80s and 90s. Although I read the first four volumes the best, we like them all. Now I send them to my grandchildren, who report them as their parents did. Not sure about all the political correct controversies. I wanted to spend the summer like this with my cousins without parents bugging us.

Highly recommend.

Considering this book is an early volume in a large series, if you get it, you can ensure that you read this book, or even the first, to him or her, and then continue, as they'll surely want to be involved in more of Walden's adventures.

The chapters 4 and 5 fall out of the book. This book has been most of a rejection from the printers, bc its coming unbonded.
