Book Overview

Strictly off limits to the public, Plum Island is home to virginal beaches, cliffs, forests, ponds -- and the deadliest germs that have ever roamed the planet. Lab 257 blows the lid off the stunning true nature and checkered history of Plum Island. It shows that the seemingly bucolic island in the shadow of New York City is a ticking biological time bomb that none of us can safely ignore.

Based on declassified government documents, in-depth interviews, and access to Plum Island itself, this is an eye-opening, suspenseful account of a federal government germ laboratory gone terribly wrong. For the first time, Lab 257 takes you deep inside this secret world and presents startling revelations on virus outbreaks, biological meltdowns, infected workers, the periodic flushing of contaminated raw sewage into area waters, and the insidious connections between Plum Island, Lyme disease, and the deadly West Nile virus. The book also probes what's in store for Plum Island's new owner, the Department of Homeland Security, in this age of bioterrorism.

Lab 257 is a call to action for those concerned with protecting present and future generations from preventable biological catastrophes.

Very interesting book about the germ warfare lab, located in very close proximity to both the Atlantic Flyway, used by migratory birds, and also the Hamptons, where America's elite hang out. The author's research and interviews with former lab personnel adds much credibility to the book. It is NO coincidence that Lyme and other Rikksial diseases escaped from this laboratory and spread up and down the East Coast. As normal, our government strongly denies responsibility for the outbreak, although prominent scientists from the lab imported specific species of hard tyls from places like Texas and Africa because of the ease with which these critters can spread deadly disease.

What an eye opener! I live on Plum Island and this book has opened my eyes and mind about what is happening here with regard to Long Island and Lyme Disease.

   Best on the subject
It is the best thing on the subject. But it is also about the only thing. And sloppy fact checking, such as misplaced names and referring to a justice, then calling the same man a judge two lines later. Having known more than a few of the main characters and lived through many of the events, I still learned a good deal.

Great information and history of the Lab, but a Bash book
It started well and carried on well into the book with great information about the history of germ and agriculture virus research and how it merged with the military. Who would have thought Lyme disease was probably an escape! The only issue is that it becomes a BASH book and that takes over and finishes the book like that. It ended with the continuing and sustained narrative of Bash and that is not what I really wanted out of the book.

   Unscientific Trash
Why are authors not satisfied with the factual interesting issues and want to turn everything into a conspiracy theory ''. Neither is very well written.

   Absolutely atrocious
The bumbling of the federal government on important issues should not surprise even the most casual observer of news. However, in this age of false data and alternate news '', it's unfortunate well-researched books like this will be dismissed as another conspiracy theory. The facts of the book, however, speak for themselves. The Plum Island is quite possibly a necessary evil, but the laxity of governmental concern over the nation's safety and security is unsettling. Lab 257 details a delightful history of a troubling place, which will always be covered in shadows. I highly recommend this book, as it is meticulously researched and well-written. Be advised, though it can enrage, chill and frighten you.

   Terrifying
Carroll makes a well researched, strong case for the connection between some unusual diseases and their possible association with the Government's Animal Disease Laboratory on Plum Island. At any rate, it seems likely that Plum Island has a checkered history rife with serious mishaps and an enormous potential for disaster, as it deals with the world's most dangerous microbes in an aging, insecure and understaffed facility. The suffering suffered by the animals is horrendous, and so is the possible exposure of the population to these agents from our worst nightmares.

Scary things going on behind our backs...bureaucrats and military trying to "save" us once again!
Scary and if it is entirely true, it explains why Ebola, Lyme, West Nile, Dutch Duck Plaque Borrelia Disease and many other deadly diseases originated coincidentally near the USDAMILITARY facility on Plum Island... just off the coast of New York City! It takes you deep inside its secret world and presents startling revelations that include virus outbreaks, biological meltdowns, infectious workers denied aid, and the periodic flushing of contaminated raw sewage into area waters. This facility, which is---coincidentally---in the flight path of migratory birds, has had birds scavenging among the dead carcasses of pigs, sheep and cows that have been killed after contracting terrible diseases. Glad I don 't live on the East Coast!
